Middlesbrough shops
« on: Wednesday 19 March 08 14:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am hoping that someone might be able to help me to find photographs or information about the following shops in Middlesbrough, all of which were targeted by my light-fingered 3 x great grandmother who spent the last fifteen years of her life ( at least) in and out of Northallerton Gaol. The timescale is roughly 1880 - 1895

John Harrison - Pawnbroker, Bolckow Street
Jacob Levy - Pawnbroker
Maurice Levi
John Hedley & Co., Linthorpe Road
Wright and Archibald - Sussex Street
Lisney and Dickson
Thomas Longstaff Hall - not sure if this was a shop or a private individual, just that she stole his boots!
An unnamed draper's shop in Newport Road.

What I really want of course is the candid shot of the shop doorway with a suspicious looking old woman lurking around the corner! But any photos or information at all would be great.

Thanks,

Jen

Hi
Another option might be to contact the local paper as they have a good archive.  Middlesbrough Evening Gazette.  The Frith one is a super site Jane.

Thanks,

I was wondering about Francis Frith as we drove home, from Lazenby to Kendal, throught the snow on the A66 a couple of hours ago, so I must have read your minds.

What I ought to do, and maybe will if I ever have the time, is to go through my enormous pile of Evening Gazette " Remember When" magazines. I shall probably find some of what I am looking for in there.

So all I need is time. Hmmm??

You should have had them in the car to read, my mum's family all used to live in Lazenby and Wilton, and all buried nicely in a row over at Wilton churchyard  ;D ;D

Good luck with it

My dad is there too. I was confirmed and married at Wilton, my older sister confirmed and married there, younger sister, baptised, confirmed and married there. Who were your ancestors?

I am just about to set off up north to Kirkby Stephen and we generally go across on the A66.  Good to know it is snowy!

I suspect the snow has all gone now. There is very liitle left in Kendal. I think there is a parallel universe in which the A66 gets blocked with snow - we drive across it regularly and on at least wo occasions recently the news has reported cars stuck, passengers stranded and the road being re-opened after snow had closed it for several hours, whereas in reality, there has been a tiny amount of snow on the verges and precious little else.
But it is very cold - bring your thermals.

Cheers,

Jen
