CROSS Family
« on: Wednesday 19 March 08 20:15 GMT (UK) »
This much I know.....

According to Baptism records for Winsham
John and Margaret Cross had 5 children
Charles b1828
Harriet b 1830
William b 1831
Henry b 1833
Andrew b 1835

Charles was myGreat X3 Grandfather who had moved to Redditch Worcs by 1851 (census) owned his own factory and was reasonably wealthy.

Harriet appears to have married a man called Porter and by 1891 was widowed. I can find her on 1891 census but no marriage details anywhere.

William according to census lived in Chard till 1901 census but I can't find a death.

Henry appears according to census to have moved to Woolwich

Andrew I can find no more about after 1861 census.

As for John and Margaret, she is suposed to have come from Rame Cornwall, I would love to find their marriage.

Any and all info very gratefully received!!

Hello Helen

Harriet Cross married Enos Porter Q1. 1855 Marylebone, London.

Enos was born 1826 in Winsham, Somerset.
He was  Police Constable.

In 1861 and 1871 Harriet and Enos were living at 10 Henry Street, Marylebone

There do not appear to have been any children

Enos died Q4 1875 Marylebone.

Helen - hello again

No luck whatsoever with Andrew - I can't find him under any guise after 1861, nor can I find a death in Somerset that matches.

William Cross age 69 death registered Chard Q2. 1901 gro ref: Vol 5c. Pg 251

What was it you needed for Henry?  Not clear from your post....

Well, I hate to ask as you have been so helpful already..... but....I know he married Frances who was born Woolwich 1833

1861 census living in Woolwich, working as a coachman

1871 census still Woolwick, now a carpenter.

1881 census, Woolwich  occupation joiner

can't find 1891 or 1901 census, can't find a death either?

Hello again-

Henry :

First off, I don't think Henry the coachman in 1861 is your Henry.

I think your Henry in 1861 was married to Frances, living in Plumstead and was a Joiner.  Census ref:  RG9. P. 409  Fol.55 Pg. 18

Henry Cross  married Frances Emily Roberts  Q4. 1860 Lewisham.

Checked Frances Roberts on the 1851 census and she was born 1833 Woolwich.

Like you I couldn't find them on 1891, however :

Henry Cross  death reg. Q2 1881 Woolwich.

I haven't found Frances in 1891;  however in 1901 she was living on her own means in Devonport, Plymouth, Devon, where she died Q2.1903.

Hope this helps!

I am amazed Dave! I given up on this post as it had been silent for so long.

I am intrigued as to how and why you have an apprenticeship indenture for what sounds like my ancestor. Can you tell me where you got it from/ where I can get a copy from? Does it give any details like address etc?

Winsham is a long way from Nottinghamshire, I wonder how they made contact in the first place. Charles eventually ended up in Redditch, Worcs. Also a long way from both Winsham and Notts.

It always surprises me the long distances our ancestors travelled!

Thanks for your help so far, looking forward to hearing more

Regards
Helen

Indenture is among my late father's papers, along with the Certificate of Marriage of Charles Cross and Eliza Smallwood:
The marriage certificate shows, as bridegroom, Charles Cross, aged 27, Bachelor, an Engineer, resident in Deritend, son of John Cross, Farmer.
Charles Cross' bride was Eliza Smallwood, age 29, Spinster, also resident in Deritend, daughter of John Smallwood, Fish hook maker.

Charles Cross was born around 1829, at Winsham, Somerset (Census 1881 : In the Census, he was described as Mechanical Engineer, dwelling, in 1881, at Ipsley Street, Studley, Warwick). Studley "was one of the earliest centres of the local industry of needlemaking . . .  Though the centre of the industry has now shifted to Redditch, there are still two large needle-mills here and several smaller concerns which produce fishing tackle." (Victoria County History - Warwickshire: Volume 3, Barlichway Hundred Parishes: Studley Pages 175-187 http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/warks/vol3/pp175-187#h3-0002 ). There is a Needle Museum in Redditch ( http://www.forgemill.org.uk/ ).

They were married on 1 December 1855 at the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Aston, in the County of Warwick, after Banns had been read. The witnesses were John Smallwood and Harriet Smallwood. The officant vicar was Geo. Peake.
