How do you find out a Vessel Ship # based on ship name?
« on: Friday 21 March 08 11:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi there, I am on a hunt for information for one of my most challenging ancestors yet, funnily enough he is born in 1882 when census, BMD etc is available - my problem though is because he was a steward/cook on merchant ships I want to find crew lists or the ships he served on.  I have the "Loch Tay" from 1905 but in order to pursue his previously named ship he was on "British Monarch" I have to put in a Vessel Reg. #, I have had no luck finding it.

Can any seafarers out there help me?

Hello galaxydreaming,

Have you seen this web site. Type in a ship's name and it gives you it's offiicial number.

British Monarch seems to have been a favourite name, there are several to choose from

Leighton- thanks for posting that link- it's a fantastic site. Just doing one search I found 5 family vessels using the same surname and will now start searching for the other names that I know.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Oh that is awesome! Thank you so much for that, I spent 2 hours reading guides on Maritime Muesum, googling names, trying Cyndi's List site and just couldn't find something like this.  Your brilliant!!   ;D
