Muirs of Ireland
« on: Thursday 13 January 05 14:42 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find information on John Muir or his family.  I know that he was born somewhere in Ireland c.1829 to Alexander and Ann (nee McKrey?) and later emigrated to Neilston in Renfrewshire, Scotland, where he married Margaret Monie on 6th August 1867.

Anyone able to help  ???

Hi

Have you found him on the Scottish (or English) censuses 1861 or earlier? Or the later censuses which may give county or parish/townland of birth.

Hi Kate,

The only information I have so far is the 1881 Renfrew census has his birthplace as "Ireland".  I have no access to earlier census data, but will post in the Renfrewshire forum and see if anyone can help.

Thanks,

Ian

OK, found additional information as to the birth place of John Muir, but unfortunately unable to make it out  :'(

Any help deciphering the following...

<somewhere, Ireland> is all I can make out

Thanks,

Ian

Tricky writing.

Try different combinations of what the letters may be inthe townland name in http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/ database.

Compare the letters with other words you can make out on the same form. Last letter is a k, rest uncertain!

OK, I think I have it sussed  :D

What looks like a 'K' at the end of the first word is actually part of the 'I' of 'Ireland'.  I think the first word is 'Antrim'.

Isn't it amazing once you know what the word says, you can't see any other word and can't understand why you never saw it in the first place. Well done!

Ian,

I have some Antrim links on my website you may find useful. Otherwise look for the name in Antrim in the Griffith Valuation.
