Quaker birth records
« on: Monday 24 March 08 09:18 GMT (UK) »
While trying unsuccessfully to find a  record on the I.G.I,  I found several of his sisters in a couple of batches (C009793 + C009794) all from the "Society of Friends QM" London/Essex/Kent.   Did they keep separate records for boys and girls and does anyone know why only the girls ones are here?

The Society of Friends Quarterly Meetings are filled with all events for members that have been recorded in each separate regional meeting house.  This covers deaths, births, marriages and transfers from one meeting house to another.  This records are submitted by representatives of each meeting house at the Quarterly Meetings and are jointly recorded in the record for that quarter.

I know the records for certain regions in Canada are on-line.  I believe I have an on-line resource for some English regions but off hand I can't remember the location.  I will try and find it tomorrow to see if it covers your area of interest.

As to the IGI listing the girls and boys separately I don't understand their reasoning for doing that but I have found it done that way with some  Parish Records as well.

Have you tried a simple google for "Society of Friends Quarterly Meetings/London/Essex/Kent?

I will check to see what area of England I have tomorrow.

Sorry I couldn't really answer your question.

I was just wondering if you have seen this website:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/032i/   or this one:

http://www.quaker.org.uk/Templates/Internal.asp?NodeID=90018

There is a lot of information there about Quakers....but unfortunately it appears you would have to visit the Library in London.

I will look for the website that I have seen with the actal records on them.

Yes, thank you dollylee. I did see those threads.

I was just curious really to know if there were any more brothers for my ancestor Joseph Catton (b.1815) I didn't know about.  I know his parents were Samuel Catton and Mary from his marriage certificate and they lived in Plaistow,West Ham. (spelling tends to vary-Cotton/Cattan)
Also I would like to find Samuel and Mary's marriage.

Looks like a trip to the library sometime!

I could never find ANY of my Quakers on the IGI so that is why I can't really answer your first question.

It does look like a trip to the library would bring a great deal of information and be well worth the trip.  I would tend to call them first to make sure exactly what is available to view as not a member.

Good luck and maybe someone will drop in who can actually answer your question.
