Joseph Simpson in 1871 Angus census Lookup please
« on: Thursday 13 January 05 18:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi, We are trying to trace what the origins of Joseph Simpson who was born in approximately 1847 and married Mary Ann Fowler. We know he was married in 1868 and had one child in 1870 (William Cruikshank Simpson). Any information from the 1861/1871 census of where he was born and who was living with him would be extremely usefull.

Many thanks in advance............Andy

Many thanks for the quick reply. The only problem is I cannot be sure which one he is which is why I hoped I would find a census entry with him and his wife (and child) in Angus identifying his place of birth.

Thanks again.

Unfortunately there is as yet no idex to the 1861 and 1871 censuses, so if you want someone to look it up for you, you need to tell them where to look.

You can view the birth certificates of the four children online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. These will tell you the addresses where they were born. If the address where William Cruickshank Simpson was born on 23 october 1870 is the same as the one where Ann Fowler Simpson was born on 9 November 1872, you can go straight to that address in the 1871 census.

Alternatively, since they were married in Dundee on 31 December 1868, you could view their marriage certificate online. This will tell you their ages at marriage and the names of their parents, which you can use to find their baptisms via the International Genealogical Index at www.familysearch.org.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks Forfarian for your input which was extremely helpfull. I have subsequently taken your advice and downloaded both Birth certificates from 'Scotlands People' and come up with the following address:

16 Dura Street, Dundee (St. Andrews District).

If anybody has access to the 1871 Census then the information from this address would be very usefull.

Thanks again
