Simms Family in Hawnes 1861/51/41 census
« on: Friday 14 January 05 12:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Could anyone look up the following info please:

1861 census, Hawnes
Maria Simms (poss Head, prob wife) 54 born Ritchen, Hertfordshire
Sarah Simms 20 born Hawnes dau
George Simms 18 born Hawnes son
Anne Maria Simms 12 born Hawes dau
Arthur Simms 2 born Hawes grandson

1851 - same place, same people, without Arthur (all 10 years younger)
1841 - Poss Maria, Sarah, and Maria's Husband

On the 1871 Census, they seem to be living at a place called Deadman's Cross in Hawnes, and Maria is down as Head/Widow. Arthur seems to be Sarah's illegitimate son.

Any of the above info would be most welcome, especially if there are any further children, or a male lodger/servant living with Sarah......

Thanks for reading,

James

Deadmans Cross is a hamlet in Hawnes/Haynes which straddles the main Bedford-Hitchin road. 2 pubs on either side of the road, a garage and half a dozen houses. Blink and you miss it, particularly if you're speeding.

Can't help with 1851 I'm afraid

Hi James

As a Bedford local, I think that Hawnes is also known as Haynes.

Use the following link to see info of area from 1866 directory

http://www.genoot.com/eng/bdf/h/haynes/imperial_1866.html

Deadman's Cross is a small area/Red Lion pub on the A6 between Bedford & Shefford, just a mile or so from village of Haynes.

Don't cunfuse this with Deadman's Hill - the notorious spot of the A6/Hanratty murder on the A6 in 1962
