Hi Annie

We're always in the news for one thing or another . . .

Here is a great picture of the ventilation system for the old (Liverpool to Birkenhead) road tunnel started in 1925 and finished in 1933 - amazing for its day. Its from a magazine called Wonders of World Engineering which was published in 1937.

Here also is a link to the Tunnel Users association - gives a brief history of the two road tunnels and some good links and pics.

http://www.tunnelusers.org.uk/history.htm

You can also look inside the tunnels on these webcams

Co-incidentally, my father in law's first job was as a tea lad on the Liverpool to Birkenhead road tunnel.

Regards

Ruby

As a girl from Cheshire I was amazed to travel on both - Liverpool was somewhere we went for a day out - before the day of the car, we went on the train.

Hi Annie

Unfortunately for my mother in law, Stan never did anything in the house so I don't know about his tea. He ended up being a painter and decorator by trade and never, as far as I know, painted or decorated the house!

Mumsie, I was almost an adult before I realised that the tunnels were under ground under the water. I used to have nightmares about the tunnel cracking and Liverpool being flooded! Seriously! That and the banshee in the film Barney McGill and the Little People are my remembered nightmares from when I was a child.

Sadly,

Ruby

Not Barney McGill but Darby O'Gill - still - not bad remembering most of the name after xx years!
