FISHER family of Tiverton
« on: Friday 04 April 08 06:49 BST (UK) »
I would like to make contact with anyone researching, or interested in, the FISHER family from Elm Cottage, Tiverton, viz.

FISHER Stephen (c1822-1882) = Sarah Anne (c1826-1910)
  - an accountant with a lace factory in Tiverton - had 6 (known) children

1. FISHER Ambrose Brewin (1850-1909) = Emily LOWE
  - Inspector of Schools with twin daughters

2. FISHER William Cartwright (1851-1885)

3. FISHER Stephen Henry (1853-) = Caroline Sarah TABOR
  - Physician and Surgeon of Tiverton

4. FISHER Frederic Bazley (1854-) = Cecilia Metcalf TABOR
  - General Practitioner, of Dorchester DOR with 4 (known) daughters including twins

5. FISHER Arthur (1859-1916) = Marion Emma BRADDON
  - Solicitor, of Tiverton DEV with 2 (known) daughters

6. FISHER Helen Frances (1863-1876)

My main interest is in William Cartwright FISHER whom I would like to prove married my Edith Sophia WEBB who had a daughter, Nora FISHER, born 1884 in Tiverton.

I can find No record of Edith in the 1881 Census, married or otherwise.

By 1891 Edith Sophia FISHER (40) was a widow, living on her own means in Dorking SRY [near her sister] with a daughter, Nora FISHER (6) born Tiverton.

In 1901 they were in Walton in Gordano [Bristol] SOM.

Both women were alive in 1907 and attended Bishop Webb's funeral at Salisbury Cathedral - Edith was his sister.

Any further information which anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jill

i have been looking around for a marriage for Your Edith Sophia Webb. Can't find one at the moment ...will keep looking.

Do you have William Cartwright Fisher's death cert.... If so who registered it? If not it may be a good idea ...maybe Edith reg. it .

Do you have Edith in all census except 1881?

Hi again

I see Stephen b 1822, on the 1841 census ...he is with his 'sisters' who are governesses. There is a will on national Archives for Stephen Fisher schoolmaster of Tiverton, dated 1839. I wonder if he is yours?

Online document; PROB 11/1906

there is nothing on NA for William C Fisher, unfortunately. Still cannot see a marriage .... I take it you have Nora's birth cert.

Deb,

Stephen died in 1882, so Probate will be for an earlier generation.

Yes, I have Edith in all Census except 1881 which I find strange, unless she was visiting her brothers in India or South Africa.

I, also, have searched for Edith's marriage for a number of years in the quarterly indexes with no luck.

William Cartwright FISHER's death fits perfectly with the scenario of a young widow.

Birth Certificate on order.

Thanks, Jill

I live in part of Elm House, Tiverton.  The former residence of Stephen Fisher.
The original Regency House has now been sub divided into 2 properties and according to the 1911 census had 14 rooms.
I have done a little research as i was interested in the former residents of the property.
Stephen Fisher was the accountant to the Heathcoat Factory, which used to make lace but now manufactures precision engineered fabrics.  The main living rooms and bedrooms look down the valley to the factory as a constant reminder of his employer!
I was also intrigued that Stephen's son Frederic Bazley was Thomas Hardy's Physician, in Dorchester, Dorset.
If you would like a photo of the property, please let me know.

Dear Jill,
I am distantly related to your William Cartwright Fisher.
It might be that he married Edith Sophia Webb in Bloemfontein,
because of the following entry from the index of wills:
1885
FISHER, William Cartwright. Personal Estate 1684 pounds 16s 1d.
13th July.
The Will of William Cartwright Fisher formerly of Bloemfontein
in the Orange Free State South Africa Sub-Manager of the National
Bank of the Orange Free State Limited but late of Elm Cottage
Tiverton in the County of Devon who died 8 April 1885 at Elm
Cottage was proved at the Principal Registry by Edith Sophia
Fisher of 43 Howard-road Dorking in the County of Surrey Widow
the Relict the sole Executrix.

I have more information on this family. Please send me a personal
reply.

Regards,
Donald Cartwright
