Hello Terry

This is a bit of a poke in the dark but I wonder if you could look at your M.I. records for McClinton and McCaskie.

Thanks for taking the trouble.

TERRY - I am helping my husband search his Hewitt family line.  His grandfather was a commander in the Royal Navy, James Gilmour Hewitt (b1908 - d1973 Liverpool, Eng), m. Gwendoline Morris (b.1914 - d 1958).  I read with interest your post from the Inch churchyard.  The father of James Gilmour Hewitt was James Hewitt reportedly a chief engineer on a ship and from Scotland.  I wonder if his great grandparents might have been the James Hewitt and Mary Gilmour mentioned in the church records?

Any insight would be appreciated.  Many Thanks,

Pam Hewitt

Hi Pam,

I think you may have a match here, I would certainly be looking at it. Especially with the Gilmour middle name for James and the fact that Mary died in Liverpool.

Did you mean James Hewitt/ Mary Gilmour might have been your husbands g grandparents. If so they would really have to have been his gg grandparents, Mary Gilmour d 1892 James Gilmour Hewitt b 1908.

Joseph/Ann
James/Mary (James merchant in Stranraer)
James/?       (James reportedly Chief Engineer)
James /Gwedoline (James Commander Royal Navy)

The 1841 census for Inch Wigtownshire on Freecen has the following:

Barsolas, Inch

Joseph Hewitt aged 46 Agricultural Labourer b Ireland
Ann Hewitt   aged 56   b outside census county
Margaret aged 20   b Wigtownshire
Andrew  aged 11   b Wigtownshire
(Ages may be out on 1841 census)

Also another Joseph (possible son of above Joseph)

1841  Clinnoch, Inch

Joseph Hewitt 25 agricultural labourer b Wigtownshire
Jannet Hewitt 25                                  b Wigtownshire
Joseph Hewitt 2                                    b Wigtownshire
John Hewitt     4 months                       b Wigtownshire

As you have only done one posting (I think you have to do 3)you will not be able to send a personal message yet. Would you like me to send a pm to Lindsaysiam who posted the original query, I think she will be able to help you and she may not look at this thread again.
