Hurst...?Jam
« on: Wednesday 09 April 08 14:02 BST (UK) »

Hi,

the story goes in my family that my grandfather, James Hurst Miller was named after his father had made some kind of deal with a jam manufacturer called Hurst. My mum believes this story even today.  :o

I have tried to google it, with no joy.  ::)

Does anyone know of a Hurst Jam making company. I presume it is in Lancashire, because this is where my grandparents and gt grandparents lived. My grandfather was born 1905, Liverpool.

Thanks in advance,

Red   :)

Nearest I can find is a preserve manufacturer in Stockport by the name of John Greenhalgh Ltd, whose factory was in Hurst Street in Reddish. A bit tenuous!

Don't give up Red, there's always a grain of truth in these stories.

Just found this:

"I am trying to trace the history of Hurst's jam preserves which used to be situated where ASDA can be found today. I believe it was started by William Hurst in about 1911. He was the son of William and Ellen Hurst who lived in Caroline Street, Wigan. It was then taken over by Thomas Hurst, one of his sons. It finally closed in about the 1950's, possibly sold out to Mathers. "

Here's another reference - same person:

"The float belonged to William Hurst, fruit preservers of Wigan. He was my greatgrandfather, who started the fruit preserving works in 1911."

Thank you Shaun and Annie  ;)

The story goes that the owner of Hurst Jams didn't have any sons. So he made a deal with my gt grandfather. He asked him to name his next born child with the Hurst name, and he would give my gt grandfather shares in the company. Apparently, nothing was ever written down on paper. And when my grandfather was born, he was named James Hurst Miller. The owner backed down from his side of the deal  ??? ::) :o :-\ ;D

Thats the story my nan told my mum and her siblings.

Researching this branch of my tree reveals that my gt grandfathers mother's maiden name was...Hurst  :o ;D

Who know why she told this story, or if   there is a connection somewhere between the Hursts in my tree and the Hurst jam boss. My Hurst family came from Upholland.
