I'd like to see the original parish register entry

Yes, me too.  There was a thread the other day telling of a possible similar tale:

Hope you have a productive time Marianne - do they have the Maidstone registers there?

Casalguidi :)

Yes I am 99% sure that they have them. I did try to have a look last time I went but the records were very difficult to read. I now have a good reason to stay the course and find the records to either prove or disprove that this is indeed MY Charles Welch.

There are Welch families having children baptised in All Saints, Maidstone (no-one called Welsh)

The only Charles is this one:
3 Jun 1804  Charles son of William & Jane WELCHGRAY
Born 16 Apr.

There's also a Louisa, dau of this couple, & a Thomas & Eliza, children of William & Jane WELCH.

Betty, thanks for the information. I can find no other references to the name Welchgray so wonder if it should be son of William Welch and Jane Gray. My ancestor said on all the census returns that he was born in Maidstone.

I can't see a WELCH/GREY marriage on the IGI. :(

There are some GRAYS marrying in Maidstone at that time (Ann 1797, Mary 1793, Rose 1805 & Thomas 1810).

casalguidi may know the answer to this ;) -

M020079 (marriages 1770s-1812 for All Saints, Maidstone) is one of the recently added batch numbers.  The entries only go up tp SUTTON.  Are the rest of the records missing or part of another batch number? ???

The Society of Genealogists has the BTs for Maidstone All Saints and as I recall aren't the most legible records in the world.

The PRs are still in the custody of the incumbent and were only filmedfairly recently (the floods of a few years ago concentrated peoples' minds). The Centre for Kentish Studies has the film and it's much easier to read.

Thank you to all who have answered on this `brickwall` of mine. Lots of information to start me looking seriously at the S.O.G records (which are in a pretty rough state). If not then a welcome trip to the Centre for Kent Studies may be called for.  Again thank you all.

Best wishes
Marianne.
