German surnames

I am looking for the Assert family, living in Whitechapel in 1870s.

Particularly Adolf Bernart Assert living at 91 Minories, Whitechapel at the time of his marriage to Johanne Meinecke in 1874. I have gained his address and marriage date from the St Georges Lutheran Church, Whitechapel.

I know they had a son, Alfred, born London, 1876. They also had a daughter Louie, born 1886, but I don't know where (even her death cert. doesn't say).
I know she did not marry and lived in Leeds until her death in 1970. I have located Alfred Assert on the 1901 census in Hull (Johanne moved to Hull and married again)

But the earlier Assert family are proving elusive.
When did Adolf come to Britain?
When/where did he die?
Is he or his family to be found on any census?
Can he be traced anywhere else?

I was particularly wondering, as I know many Germans anglocised their names, what other variations of Assert I could look for.

Can anyone help?

This is a bit of a long shot:

I entered "assert" in the Jewish Gen. UK databases http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/UK/
with a soundex search and it turned up one record:
Name, Trade,  Address, Postal District, Source, Year, Notes
ISZARD, Meshash carpenter & builder High St, Stoke Newington N Pigot 1836 
 
I put some ideas about name changing on this thread: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=11860.0 and I think ISZARD / ASSERT is a "sounds similar" possibility.

Try other jewish databases with soundex searches for similar names, that might bring up some more possibilites.

Thanks for your help.
I've followed the leads you suggested and many others.

I discovered many members of the EISERT family born in Oels, Germany.
Unfortunately, I do not know any German pronunciation, but could the 'EI' of Eisert be translated into the 'A' of Assert.
It may seem a stab in the dark, but my Adolf Bernart Assert was born in Oels (c1850) (His father was named as Carl Assert, a builder, desceased in 1874)

go for it !!

EISERT is pronunced  EYE-SERT, very similar to ASSERT

Oels is/was in Schlesien, it is now part of Poland.

If you enter Eisert in GEDBAS, http://gedbas.genealogy.net/index.jsp
you get 44 EISERTs, most of them from Lodz, near Danzig in West Prussia, now also in Poland.

Another posiibility is GENEANET: http://www.geneanet.org/ with 157 EISERTs,
