Please identify uniform
« on: Saturday 12 April 08 23:50 BST (UK) »
Hi
Can anyone tell me from the photo, what unit my grandfather belonged to during the 1914-18 war? He was obviously in a mounted regiment and some members of my family say he was a lancer. He did tell me he was injured from a mustard gas attack so I am presuming he served on the Somme.

He was Welsh from  Glamorgan but I am not sure if this necessarily means he joined a Welsh regiment.

Hopefully someone can throw some light.

Hi Dragonfly,
The cap badges looks like it could be The Westminster (Yeomanry) Dragoons.  However if you can do a high res' posting of just the cap badge it may help to decide one way or the other.

Hi Old Rowley

That is great news (you would not believe how long I have been trying to find out my Grandad's unit!) and looking at the cap badges  on Google, yep I agree.

I have done a higher res but as this is a picture of a picture etc  I dont think much more can be gleamed but please let me know if you can deduce any more. I always did think there were horses on each side but could never find a cap badge to match.

Once again many thanks, it is much appreciated.

Yes Dragonfly  :)

Looks like OR has identified the cap badge.  Are you putting his name on here for more help, or are you going to seek out his medal index card and get back to us!  :-\

Hi atom 12

Yes, any help would be more than appreciated.

I have had no luck on the medal index front or the army records released on Ancestry website because his name is (wait for it - and dont groan too much - or run away and hide) George Ford Williams.   ???

Do you still think you can help?

Hi Phil
Many thanks for your interest. I downloaded the details and on one side it gave details of a Geoffrey Firmaston Williams and a Geo Frederick Williams, the other  a George F Williams so I am hoping this is my Grandad.  It gives the 'Corps' as RFA and RGA. It also give a Regt No. so I will use those nos to see if I can get any war docs.

I must admit that I do not know much about the medal cards  but now I will be able to get stuck in!
Many thanks

Hi Dragonfly

Are you on about the same medal card that Phil put on the forum! where it says that George was:

County of London Yeomanry 135251 Private
Machine Gun Corps 151784 Private

Note:  the 2nd Westminster Dragoons made up part of The County of London Yeomanry.

You can always post a medal card here if you feel you need any more assistance.

Hi Atom

Yes, I realise now that this is the medal card that is most likely. I have since spent an hour or two trying to use his regiment number on the Ancestry website but still I have no further info. Would really appreciate advice as to what to do next :-\
