Hi Jorose,
unfortunately the NSW index's do not give age at time of death, and I am still deciding whether it is worth my getting the certificate.  Not a close link to my lines.
Her son, Alfred, would be something like 1st cousin to my Gr grandmother.  ::)

I can't see any other children that she may have had to other men either.

I will search up the birth certificate for Alfred again and see what I might have missed.

certificate not where it is suppose to be ::)

Ok, done some playing:
seeing as Charles Overend, father of Alfred was born in 1828, then I looked for any baptisms of Selina in that timeslot.

Found a baptism for a Selina Carbis on the 10th June 1831 at Saint Buryan, Cornwell, parents: Henry and Mary.
Found the family in 1841, large family,  but not in 1851.

So checked Vic shipping, mass emmigration of the Carbis clan: this was in 1849 on the Lysander.
Selina is 18 which fits the baptism found.
So very possible this is the family.
Now will research with the name Carbis not Carbes in mind. ;D

What do you all think.

and . . . the best I could find in the NSW indexes for Carbis is:

Alfred A Carbis died in 1906 at Newtown.
mothers name Edemar - now I can see if this name is scribbled in could well be Selina/selinar????  If the E is written like a backwards 3.

EDIT - please disregard this - Margaret was looking at a birth  ::) ::)

Hi Margaret

This sounds like a great piece of research on your part - sounds very likely to be the right family and the right Selina, to me!  Looking forward to seeing what else you find out...

Thanks Marie, starting to lose concentration, note last entry by me in this thread ;D

Still have other states to look but there was a lot of the Carbis family about, and when I tried looking for Carbes, not much at all.  So this is obviously the name.

Hi Dee, just spotted your comment coming in.
Hmm, well that makes it a bit difficult as my Selina Carbis was listed as just that, Carbes/carbis.
Perhaps there are two Selina's.

Just throwing thoughts into the pond......  ;D  ;D

Have checked all the Victorian Indexes and the only other mention I can find of Selina Carbis Cater and husband Frederick William Cater is the death of a 2 year old child, Samuel Truefoot Cater in 1855 at Collingwood.

Can't see deaths for parents Henry and Mary Carbis either.

I wonder if Frederick William Cater died and then she had Alfred under her maiden name?

There was a death of a Henry Carbis in NSW indexes.
I will check that again.

On the shipping he is age 46, so born 1803 approx.

Do you want a list of all those on the ship?

This is the Henry in NSW

Henry Carbis, died in 1880, Sydney, parents unknown.
Of course, again no age given for NSW indexes
