Can anyone help me please
« on: Tuesday 15 April 08 15:59 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone on Roots Chat

I am not sure if you can help me or not but here goes.

One of our family have been telling me they have a photo of a relative  I believe was a  Cox in Navy uniform. On the cap band it says H M S Vangard. The photo was taken in Grantham.
I am led to believe He was on H M S Marlbrough. Which was torpedoed at the Battle of Jutland.
While the H M S Marlbrough was being mended he was transfered to the Vangard.

The H M S Vangard sank by an internal explosion on July 9th 1917with a loss of 843 men at Scarpa Flow.

What I would like to find out is if anyone could look in the Grantham Library around this date to see if they can see if there was any Cox's as casualties.

                             Kind Regards

Hi

Have you looked at http://www.orcadian.co.uk/features/articles/vanguard.htm  which appears to suggest that these deaths are on the Commonealth War Graves web site

Hi Rosie and Geoff

Thankyou for your help. The only thing is this photo we have as not got a name on the back so we are not sure of his name. I just thought if anyone was going to the library they may see some one from the Grantham area in the old Journal who was on the Vanguard.

                       Thank you both

Hi Naffie girl

Have checked Grantham Journals between May-Dec 1917 and could not find any mention about HMS Vanguard and the Cox family but I will check again at the weekend in case I missed it.

Henry Frank Cox died in the explosion on the HMS Vanguard. He had a brother and I think his mother Susan died in a fire.  He had a step sister when his father re-married. What do you know about him and what is your family connection?

Hi there - I am working on a project to find a photograph of every crew member of HMS Vanguard who were killed in the 1917 explosion.
I have looked at the service records of all 5 COX surnames who were stationed aboard the Vanguard - one was Fleet Surgeon Cox.  I have checked the service records of the other 4 and non of them are mentioned being aboard HMS Marlborough during the Battle of Jutland.

Would you be able to email me the image privately; I may be able to help identify or rule out?

Many thanks, Wendy
