BULL family of St. Neots.
« on: Thursday 17 April 08 21:05 BST (UK) »
Hello, my ggg grandmother was Sarah BULL, who married John GOODWIN in 1817. She was born in St. Neots about 1791 but I have no further information about her.

I am charting a James BULL, born about 1807 in St. Neots, who married Ann GOSS, also of St. Neots, in 1828. They had ten children between 1828 and 1852, all born in St. Neots, one of whom, Robert, emigrated to Australia with his family in 1850.

I am trying to tie in James to my Sarah.

Can anyone help with information on Sarah or James and his family please?

Thankyou and regards
Ron Goodwin, Chorley, Lancashire.

Yes, thank you Sue. I have all the census details right from 1841 onwards, but it's her birth, parents, siblings that I have no information at all on. Thank you for the possible death, I haven't checked that yet.

Until relatively recently St Neots was difficult to research unless you could get to Huntingdon Records Office. Burials are on the NBI, marriages are on Hunts Marriage Index, but you had to go to Huntingdon for baptisms. But now at least there is a baptism transcript available on fiche from Hunts FHS

Thank you for that David. I've just obtained a set of the St. Neots Baptism fiche and now have some of the answers.  It now looks like Sarah was the fourth of eight children born to Robert BULL and Elizabeth, and was baptised in 1799, a little later than I expected but I was basing my estimate on her age [60] given in the 1851 census. It looks like she died before the 1861 census and so I don't really know her exact age.  I can now tie her in with James, who was the eighth of the eight children, and he was baptised in 1811 [aged 6 weeks].  Unfortunately there is no Robert BULL baptism in St. Neots, and, more disappointingly, there is no marriage for Robert BULL and Elizabeth in the Hunts Marriage Index 1754-1837 Surname B.  So, for now, I can get no further back.

If you walked over the bridge across the River Ouse from St Neots, Hunts you were in Eaton Socon, Beds.

On the IGI (extracted so reliable) there's a Robert Bull married Elizabeth Trawley on "about" 8 Oct 1793 at Eaton Socon. The date would fit with Sarah being the fourth child in 1799, but I agree that her census ages are a bit disconcerting as both 1841 and 1851 would put her birth at 1790/1. Does the 1817 marriage entry give any clue as to age eg with consent of parents, or even Sarah's age as she appears to have been under 21?

Might be interesting asking for a look up on the Beds board to see what Robert's parish of residence was shown as in the transcript of the 1793 marriage.
