Francis TAYNTON 1764
« on: Monday 21 April 08 09:55 BST (UK) »
Francis TAYNTON married Anne RIDDING 30 Jul 1764, at Wonston, Hampshire, according to the IGI.

Does anyone have access to PRs to see if he is a clergyman, and is likely to have become the vicar at Frindsbury in Kent shortly thereafter.

Think I might have found the answer doing a Google Book Search. There is a snippet view of Hampshire Marriage Licences

Hi Ian,

The full entry reads:

Francis Taynton of Bromley Kent, clerk, 30, bachelor & Ann Ridding of Wonston, 19, spinster, with the consent of her father, the Rev Thomas Ridding, clerk, 21 July 1764.

Benjamin Ridding, a Fellow of King's College Cambridge, acted as a bondsman.

As you say, the marriage took place in Wonston on 30 July 1764.

Thanks Nell

Looks like it is him. A son John TAYNTON joined up with HEICS and married there c1800 and died 1831.

Is there anything else about the RIDDINGs.

Not at that time.  But I have found these burials which look promising:

Rev Mr Ridding 14 Mar 1766 Winchester Cathedral
Widow of Rev Mr Ridding 2 Feb 1779 Winchester Cathedral

There are a number of other burials in Winchester Cathedral for Riddings.  Two infant burials in Wonston in 1746 and 1747 (Mary and Joseph) and a Sarah in 1752, no age given.

Thomas Ridding's ordination papers from 1734 are at Hampshire Record Office.

I'm just going to look for some baptisms which may help identify the burials in Winchester.

Thanks again Nell.

Might post a separate thread about the RIDDING line. Not much luck in finding Hannah's maiden name.

Hi Ian,

Thomas Ridding was the son of Joseph Ridding, gentleman, of St James' Westminster.  Attended Christ Church, Oxford - matriculated age 17 in 1726-7.  Gained his BA in 1703, Masters in 1734.  He was appointed rector of Wonston in 1740.  He was also prebendary of Winchester 1745, and archdeacon of Surrey from 1760 until his death on 15th March 1766. (another source says 9th March)

Francis Taynton was the son of Nathaniel Taynton, gentleman of Cowbridge in Glamorganshire.  He attended Jesus College, Oxford, matriculating in December 1749 aged 18.  Gained his BA in 1743, MA in 1756 and was vicar of Farley in Kent when he died in 1794.

No luck with a marriage at the moment - sorry. :(

Thanks Nell.

I had found Francis Taynton being the son of Nathaniel, but nothing about the Riddings. Will look in London.
