This is all starting to come together. If you combine the entries from freebmd with some from freereg in Shepton Mallet, it gives actual dates of baptism and marriage for some of these characters. It looks as if James was born in 1825, and baptised in 1827, but I can't see a baptism for John, even though both the 1841 and 1851 Censuses make it looks like he was  born in 1827.

I wonder where John was by 1861, if he was in London with his brother in 1851?

Many thanks for all this help - it certainly looks as if "many hands DO make light work!"

Kind regards

Philip Candy

Do you need the census for William carter and Zipporah?

Or do you already have them

Out of curiosity where did you find a marriage between ann hodges and john davis in 1850s Shepton Mallett?

Hi there

I didn't find it; I'm just speculating.

In 1851, Ann (aged 27) was living with her parents - John and Ann HODGES.  I can't find her in 1861, but in that year her father John, by then a widower aged 75, is living in Shepton Mallet next to Ann and John DAVIS.

John is aged 49 and Ann 39, yet from the ages of their children, they seem only to have been married for a few years, so I was speculating that perhaps Ann had married John DAVIS.

But this is just a theory; I would need something a bit more specific by way of evidence!

Kind regards

Philip
