i am so interested in Hastings/St leonard's
« on: Monday 05 April 04 16:57 BST (UK) »
this is where i have found all my Dad's relatives and it is so very interesting! i love it! Cuthbert Baker owned the shop at 147 Queen's Road at Waterworks Road, Hastings late 1800's, James Moon owned the bakery/tearoom at 127 Marina 1860's, St. Leonard's and not sure about the elder Cripps and elder Wall (have not got that far yet) so my question is i would love to meet you if i get to hastings this August, i have Judge postcards that i will ask you about on this forum and i am looking for James Moon's birth 1800-1810 Westfield, Sussex so i would have to hire a researcher to go to Lewes, right? along with finding out his wife Mary Stretten born around the same time in Saltwood, Kent (no, i would have to get someone in Kent to look that one up), talk soon

Hi there Moon

Wow - what a lot of questions and information

Well, if you do get to Hastings, No problems - will show you around, and take you to all the places that you mention.
I often go to Lewes to do research, so no need to hire a researcher.
If his wife was born in Saltwood, Kent, yes, her birth would be there, but how and where did she meet James.
I will help you all I can to fit all the pieces together - just give me as much info as you can.

did not realize there were so many moons, James Moon was born (i think no proof, from a census, i have a date august 12, 1803 but i dont know what it means) Westfield, Sussex and Mary Streeten born Saltwood, Kent i would say around 1800-1810 married December 13, 1824 All Saints, Hastings, a labourer, Edward Venis and Harriet Chatfiield were witnessess, i dont know how they met and married in Hastings,  their children were Mary Ann 1825, James (my great great grandfather) 1827, Sarah Elizabeth 1928, William 1832, 1841 census he was a porter age 35 all saints parish, donθt know about any other censuses, he was a labourer in 1870 at son James second marriage, so i was wondering when he was born and when he passed on, how would i go about meeting you, i thought the postcards are Judges but i dont think they are because it says Judges only on one of them

Hi again

I know you have information from the 1841 census, remember their ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years.

1841 Census – Hastings, All Saints.

MOON James, 35, Porter, born in Sussex
Mary, 35, not born in Sussex
           Mary, 15, born in Sussex
           James, 13, born in Sussex
           Sarah, 11, born in Sussex
           William, 9, born in Sussex

1851 Census
HO 107/ 1635/ Folio 412/ Page 110 – 11 Spring Terrace, Hastings (St Mary-in-Castle)

MOON James, Head, Marr, 48, Porter, born Westfield, Sussex.
Mary, Wife, Marr, 49, born Saltwood, Kent
Sarah, Dau, Unm, 21, born Hastings
William, Son, Unm, 19, Fishmonger, born Hastings

It looks as though the eldest two (Mary & James) have left home

Hi Moon

Earlier you said that:

James Moon was born 12th August 1803 in Westfield, Sussex and Mary Streeten born Saltwood, Kent i would say around 1800-1810 married December 13, 1824 All Saints, Hastings, a labourer, Edward Venis and Harriet Chatfiield were witnessess.

Who was the father of James (should be on marriage certificate) as there are 3 families of Moon's in  Westfield.

wow, thanks for 1841 and 1851, did not know William was a fishmonger! i don't really know if that august date is James and i ordered the lds film to get info. on the marriage by banns so there were no parents names, just the witnesses so can i phone the Hastings records office at summerfield and order this 1824 certificate that would have the parents names on it? would knowing these other 3 families in westfield help me determine relatives maybe as i learn more?

Hi there Jennifer

Yes, as far as I know, you can phone and order certificates - ask for Mrs Francis. (a personal friend of the family - I worked with her husband for over 10 years) from the Summerfields (Hastings)  Record Office.

By getting the name of the father, we can identify which of the Westfield families are his parents - possibly the others are his brothers?

It all helps to put the jigsaw pieces together
