It is also in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Thesaurus as another name for an illegitimate child.

This another one to add to the many other English words and phrases used in the records: base; baseborn; begotten in fornication; by-blow; child of shame; lovechild; merrybegot; misbegotten; whoreson.
In Latin there are filius nullius (son of none - the girl did not know or want to say); filius populi (son of the people - anyone's guess); filius meretricis (son of a prostitute).
Strictly speaking, a bastard was the base child of a father of gentle or noble blood. The earliest known application of the term is to the Conqueror, who styled himself, "Ego Wilhelmus Cognomine Bastardus"
Although all sorts of terms are used to indicate illegitimacy, the word "bastard" is not used anything like so often as its various synonyms.
