Gainsford House, Braintree area
« on: Wednesday 30 April 08 17:37 BST (UK) »
I am trying to determine the exact location of the Gainsford House, a 15th century house that was in the Braintree, Essex area as late as 1945. If I can figure out how to attach a photo of this house, I will. This house was used as headquarters for the 1192nd Military Police Company, detachment C, during World War II. Is there anyone out there who may live in the Braintree area that knows of the history of old timber frame houses? Thanks.

Hey, You've got Reed as a name of interest. That's my last name. It's also the name of my late father who lived in that house in 1943-1945. I tried your suggestion but was unsuccessful. Tell me if you were able to do it. If the house is no longer there.......

Well - as i said I Googled it, and I just did it again and got the map and on satelite view it's on it's own in a large garden with fields around.

The address is Gainsford House, Coggleshall Road, Stisted, Braintree CM77

But of course, I've no way of knowing whether it's the same place - I can only suggest you write and ask!

Shoot, sometimes when I navigate away from this reply and come back, the entire message I just typed vanishes and I must start over again, so, here goes:
You were absolutely right! When I first tried your suggestion I got Braintree, Massachusetts so this time I keyed in Essex and UK and sure enough, the map appeared! I switched to satellite, zoomed in to the maximum and found that the roof line matches, the chimneys match and the dormer matches. Thanks so much for the push. It has made my day.
Tell me about the Reed family line you are researching. I've been working on that line for over twenty years and have only gotten back to Virginia, USA and 1810. I've have more success with my other lines including the Camp line which came from just down the road in Nazeing and Roydon, Essex and as far back as 1475 with Henry Campe.

Hi - glad you were able to make the connection.

My Reeds all came from Hampshire Uk.  So far as I know there are no related branched in USA.  The Reeds in Hampshire go back to 1750-ish so far.
