Died in the First World War

I wonder if anyone can help.  I'm looking for a Uriah GALLEY, born stoke 1878, by 1901 he was calling himself Hugh GALLEY.

I have found a medal card for a Hugh Galley, in the Yorkshire Regiment, marked as dead.  I found the same person on the CG site, died in France 06/11/1918.

But, I don't have any information to confirm its "my" Hugh Galley.

The name is v v rare, which makes me suspect its probably him. 

I can't find any other record of the death to check the age.  I've had a look at the National Archives, but nothing there apart from Medal Card.  I've googled and seen one or two PPV sites that seem to have possibly relevant indexes, but I can't find what level of detail they are likely to give me, so I'm a bit loathe to part with my cash just yet......

If anyone could find out how old he was, I'd be very grateful.

Hi,  it is possible that thr Yorkshire Regiment itself will have more details.  I take it his service record was one of the ones lost in the WW2 bombing - happened to some fo the service records we were looking for.  Most inconsiderate!!  Good luck.

SDGW has him as a Warrant Officer(Sgt Major) in 2nd Yorkshires.
Born stoke on trent,Enlisted Newcastle Under Lyme Resident Stoke on Trent
Formerley in the North Staffs Regiment 5587 which would probably make him a pre war soldier or Territorial.

So sounds promising

Hi

The 1881 Census has Uriah Galley aged 2, described as a grandson of Joseph Beckett and Mary Ann Beckett.  Francis Galley is their daughter and appears to be Uriah's mother, also a Maude Galley 14 months.

If it is the same man he didnt go overseas til after Jan 1916 and he was Mentioned In Dispatches in the London Gazette 22/5/17 page 5061 or 5081

Yes,  Ady I think he must be the man as he was born Stoke on Trent according to the 1881 Census and living there at the time of the Census.

Many Many thanks to you all, I didn't expect an answer that quick!  That extra information you have found confirms it is the same person, which is wonderful.

I do have the 1881/1891/1901 census thank you.  It is family mentioned, they are fairly easy to spot as there are so few galley at all.

I will have a look for that mention in despatches.

Ancestry have not got to the Gs in the 'burnt' documents yet. So you should keep your fingers crossed that it did survive the blitz.

He has two MICs on the NA website. One mentions the MID, and also says that he earned the MSM and TEFM - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=6650522&queryType=1&resultcount=13 - but these additional awards are not mentioned on the two MICs on Ancestry. Also, I cannot find him in the MSM roll.

As the MIC does not mention his previous service with the North Staffs Regiment it may indicate a break in service. If so there is a chance that his record as 5587 is in Kew in either WO97 (for Regulars) or WO96 (for part-time soldiers).
