Hi Mike,

I think I have found James' death in 1930 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, aged 91 years. He was the widower of Elizabeth King, no mention made of Elizabeth Kirkwood. His parents were listed as William Burt, hand loom weaver, and Jane Jack. He died from senile decay and his death was registered by his granddaughter, Mary Burt, of 38 Fullerton Street.

Elizabeth Burt, nee King, died in 1925 aged 86.

Hi Mike

One of the problems you might be having on finding info on the family is that the family name was showing as BURKE not BURT.

James BURKE married Elizabeth King on 02 JAN 1865 at Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton. The children showing to them on IGI are:

1. JAMES BURKE OR KING born 07 FEB 1863 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton
2. JANET BURKE  born 23 SEP 1866 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton
3. ELISABETH BURKE born 18 JUL 1868 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton
4. ANN BURKE born 16 JAN 1865 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton, Scotland
5. ELISABETH BURKE born 18 JUL 1868 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton
6. WILLIAM BURKE born 23 FEB 1870 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton
7. CATHERINE BURKE  born 25 OCT 1871 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton
8. JEAN BURKE born 15 APR 1873 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton

Earlier censuses for them, everyone showing as born in Kirkintilloch:

1871
James Burke 30, cotton weaver
Elisabeth Burke 30
James Burke 8
Ann Burke 6
Janet Burke 4
William Burke 1

Address: Galloway's Close, Kirkintilloch

1881
James Burt 40, Wool Spinner
Elizabeth Burt 40
James Burt 18, stone mason
Annie Burt 16
William Burt 11
Jane Burt 8
John Burt 4
Alexander Burt    3

Address: 5 Old Cast Lane, Kilmarnock Ayrshire

On James's origins, with the info provided by Hume on his parents. It's a bit of a jumble on the index I am looking at on places of birth, ages and name of James's mother. It would be worthwhile you looking at the originals:

1841- this entry is coming up on the index I am looking at as one household (it may be more than one on the original entry):

Cathrine Bark 56, lodger, b. Ireland
Catherine Burk 12, lodger, b. Ireland
William Bark 21, labourer, b. Ireland
Ann Jack 27, C H L Weaver
James Burk 8 Mo

James Martin 25
Ann Martin 22
Elizabeth Martin 5
Mary Martin 6 Mo
Charles Meier 28
Cathrine Stewart 23

Address:Back Causeway, Kirkintilloch

1851
William Burk 50, Hand Loom Weaver Cotton, b. Kirkintilloch
Helen Burk 29, Hand Loom Weaver Cotton, b. Glasgow
James Burk 9
Thomas Burk 3
Anna Burk 1
Catherine Burk    61, mother, b. Mendham

Address:West High St, Kirkintilloch

1861
William Burk 40, cotton weaver, b. Ireland, Dumbarton (?!)
Ellen Burk 40, b. Glasgow
James Burk 20, cotton weaver
Ann Burk 11
Thomas Burk 6
Ellen Burk 2

Address:High Street Galloways Close, Kirkintilloch

It looks like William Burt remarried Helen (COWIE). James's 1865 marriage cert. will help you verify parents for him given that this is information that he will have given rather than that reported at his death. I would if I was you also look at this birth cert for William Burt and Helen Cowie:

Thomas BURKE born 17 MAR 1855 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton

It's an 1855 birth cert, the first year of official registration in Scotland. For one year only, the entries ran over two pages of the register and included a wealth of additional info. For birth certs it will include the date and place of parents' marriage, how many children they had (male/female) and alive/deceased, where the parents were born and how long they had lived at usual residence. Worth a look for a more definitive guide on William Burt.

Regards.

Great finds, Monica. I had a look earlier on for births/marriage but had no luck. However, I didn't even think of Burke as a variant! ;D

Mike - From the census records Monica has given, I'm not too sure if James was married to an Elizabeth Kirkwood. :-\ Do you know where you got this information from?

OK, I have digested your facts and suggestions now. I did look at the birth certificate of Thomas b1855 and as you suggested it showed plenty of info.

I have now established that my original James Burt was indeed previously known as Burk(e) and the son of William Burk(e) and his wife Catherine Shaw.

William died on 07/09/1990 and his death cert showed his age as 66, a little different to the census. I have also established that he was born in County Monaghan, Ireland.

I suppose that will be the end of the line for my research........ unless you know better!

Once again many, many thanks to Hume and Monica

Best Wishes

Mike Nash

Hi,
I am looking for information on the Ure family. My gg grandfather Robert Wallace Ure was born 17 May 1809 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton, his parents were Alexander Ure and Janet Wallace. His siblings were
James born 13 February 1803 Kilsyth, Scotland
Janet born 1804
Isobel born 1807
Anne born 1811.
Robert came to Australia with his wife Elizabeth nee Brown on the ship "Nabob" in 1855 apparently they were living at St Ninians, Stirling before leaving for Australia. I am hoping to find out what happened to the rest of his family.
Cheers
Sue
