Well what strange news I have read here today.  All this confusion about Burke and Burt.  My grandfather was John Burke of Kirkintilloch.  My father and his siblings were all named Burt and were raised in Denny.  My great grand father was William Burke the weaver referred to below.

OK, I have digested your facts and suggestions now. I did look at the birth certificate of Thomas b1855 and as you suggested it showed plenty of info.

I have now established that my original James Burt was indeed previously known as Burk(e) and the son of William Burk(e) and his wife Catherine Shaw.

William died on 07/09/1990 and his death cert showed his age as 66, a little different to the census. I have also established that he was born in County Monaghan, Ireland.

I suppose that will be the end of the line for my research........ unless you know better!

Once again many, many thanks to Hume and Monica

Best Wishes

Mike Nash

My surname is Burt but my grandfather was Burke.
The named William Burke Burke is my G-G-grandfather
His son Thomas Burke is my G-grandfather.
Thomas's mother is Ellen Cowie.
Are you advising that William was married to Catherine Shaw prior to marrying Ellen.
