Two 1871 census Look-ups for Girvan Ayr please! Now Completed
« on: Friday 02 May 08 10:09 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

could someone please look-up on the 1871 census and try and find for me James McHallum/ McCallum born in Dailly in 1839?

At the time of the 1871 census James was living in Montgomerie Street, Girvan with his wife Margaret and their 3 children Margaret, Mary and James.

The other 1871 census lookup is for "Annie McMurtrie" who was born in Maybole Ayr in 1845. In 1871 Annie was living at Bridge Mile and working for a farmer.

Thankyou for looking

Wendy

Hi Wendy

Not sure which census you need here.....you're asking for 1871 but you already seem to have those details.  James appears to be in Girvan as a servant in 1861...indexed as James McHallam.  Do you already have this too?   I didn't yet look for Annie....let me know which direction to go in!  :)\

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,

I can understand the confusion you must of had after reading what I had written as I too had to go back over my notes to find out what I needed to know.

I received some information by distant relative that she found on freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry, on Annie McMurtrie. It mentioned the James Mc Hallum, his wife Margaret and 3 of their children were living in Montgomerie Street in Girvan in 1871 with one of Annie's children.

Apparently on the 1871 census, Annie was living in Bridge Mile working for a farmer.

It also stated in this information that Annie McMurtrie had 3 illegitimate children. It went on to say that Annie and James were cousins, but I believe that it was more likely that they were brother and sister, as James was also illegitimate.

:D Hooray!! Now I remember why I was asking for the 1871 census for both Annie and James.

So Jean, I hope this now make sense to you too and that you able to help with both or any of the census? Please let me know if it doesn't make any sense.

Kind regards
Wendy

I am new to this - my great great grandfather was James Hamilton McHallum born 14 june 1877 son of James McHallum (Farm Labourer) and Margaret.S.Collins born 28 May 1863 in Maybole

Do you know if there is any connection?

Hi LYnn

I'm not doing this tree so can't immediately say if you'd fit in.  Where was your gr gr grandfather born?  Who were the parents of Margaret S. Collins?

Best wishes
Jean

H Jean,

he was born 1877 - Deacons Close Girvan and the extract that I have is Jan 1952 from the Parish of Girvan - County of Ayr

The only Collins I can find is Margaret Cuthbert Colins - same year 1863 and it appears she was a twin, the one on the birth certificate is M.S. Collins 28th May 1863, Maybole.

Don't quite know how this works

Lynn
