Wills

Have found an old book on-line listing some English Wills at:

http://www.archive.org/details/calendarofwillsr00churrich

Would someone look at this and tell me what it means when it has the word "sentence" after the name?  Also, how would one get a copy of such an old document?  Came across this Calendar of Wills while hunting for wills for my Sibley ancestors in Hertfordshire (??). Some of the wills are quite old.

Since this calendar is an extract from the Canterbury Wills they can all be searched for at the National Archives on-line site and the actual wills down loaded at a cost I think of £3.50 each.

A sentence is a judgement about a disputed will. It may or may not contain the same details as the will.

Thank you David & Guy.  Before spending money, want to be sure the details of what is wanted is clear in my mind.  Have used Scotland's Peoples to get copies of BMD's, and a cousin got one of the Wills.  Presume that English Wills would be available from English Archives?  Great disadvantage being across the pond for this type of research.

Hi Lauriane

The link below is direct to the NA documents online search page.

Just enter the name and uncheck all the boxes except Wills
If the will is there, it will be listed
You than then pay £3.50 online and download the scanned copy of the Will immediately.
Its's a perfectly safe transaction and accessible world over ;D

Hi Jenny:

:)Thank you for the site and tips.  Site does look familiar and maybe it is where I found the 10 wills under the name of Henry Sibley.  Am awaiting word from a cousin who said she ordered a couple but they were not our Henry.  That way could eliminate a few from the list of 10.

Appreciate you response.
