Bucklands in Bucks
« on: Wednesday 07 May 08 07:20 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace a Thomas Buckland, born in 1791 who lived in the Burnham area of Bucks in the 1800's. He had a son Alfred, who was a bricklayer, and two grandchildren, Alfred and George who were also Bricklayers in Beaconsfield.

Thanks

Hi Skull

from your other thread you give Alfred as being born circa 1840....
I see the family in 1841 and 1851.

Thos BUCKLAND head mar 68 ag lab b Hitcham Bucks
Martha wife 46  b Burnham
Emma dau 17
Liverner? dau 14
Sophia dau 12
Alfred son 10
Thomas son 8
Mary dau 6

all born in county

they seem to have stayed in the same area.... there is no indication as yet that they were travellers ...but Buckland is a well known name in Gypsy history ...they may well be related.

Hello Deb

Thanks for this! I have already come across this Thomas Buckland, but wasn't sure if he was the right one as the dates are all a bit confusing. According to the 1841 Census aged 50, he was born in 1791, but in the 1851 Census aged 68, he must have been born in about 1783.  That's 8 years difference. In the 1861 Census aged 76, he was born in 1785. Do you think it's the same person?  I've come across another  Thomas Buckland born in 1791 in Wraysbury, Bucks through someone else on the Ancestry website via the Bucks History Society, but don't have any other details.

I've only just started this researching into my family's history so it's all a bit confusing. I don't have a clue what IGI, extracted or submitted means, but I guess I'll learn!

Re Thomas Buckland: I think this is the right person, as everything else seems to tie-in. I guess he was being a bit economical with the truth as far as his age was concerned when it came to the different censuses, because he was so much older than his wife.

Re Richard Bucklin and Mary: The only Richard Bucklin I've found was born in Amersham in 1767. Thomas was baptised in Hitcham in 1785. Richard and Mary Bucklin had 6 children, the first, William was baptised in 1780 and the last, Jeremiah, in 1792. As Richard would have been too young (about 13) to have had William, and 18 to have had Thomas, I suppose this doesn't quite work out.
