COMPLETED: 1881 Census Lookup - Garland

William Garland born abt 1841 Bristol Glouc. - Boiler Maker
Esther Garland born abt 1847 Warwickshire - His Wife

I can find them both (my g.g. grand-parents) with various, different children on the;
1871 Census: RG10/587 35 16  - Poplar, Middlesex
1891 Census: RG12/507 57 42  - St Nicholas, Deptford

but I can't find them at all on the 1881 census. I'm assuming that the children on the 1871 census have grown and flown the nest by the 1891 census, but I'd like to find them on the 1881 census along with their younger siblings just to tie the two together.

I'm a bit new to all this so am probably missing a trick that more experienced hands would find a breeze, so if anyone can help me with my first post I'd be very grateful.

One of the children in 1871, Benjamin, appears to have died in Dec 1871 in Poplar, aged 2.

I don't have access to the 1891 - what were the birthplaces of the children born nearest to that date? I can't spot them on the 1881 even using the usual tricks - first name search, initials only, etc.

One thought is that they might be under Esther's maiden name, if you know it.  I have one case where I'm convinced that's just what they did - either side they were under Woolf, then one census they're Walkers for no particular reason.

all the kids in 1891 are born Deptford ..... the elder 2 are George 17 and John 14 - ie born 1874 and 1877 ish .....

No joy - even using occupation and NO names at all !

I also looked at 130 Watergate street in 1881 (they were there in 91 ) .....

Thanks for information about Benjamin, Jorose. The Newfster is right about the children on the 1891 Census, all born in Deptford. I haven't got Esther's maiden name yet but I'm going to try and get hold of George's birth cert (the 17yr old in 1891) as I'm descended from him and I've just noticed a difference in his age - his marriage cert in 1905 states age as 28, he should have been 31 (Maybe having an 18yr old bride prompted a slight reduction?).

Can't help with the 1881 census either (despite searching for a long time!) but I think the only likely marriage is:

Jun 1869 Stepney  1c 819   
William Garland to Hester Jackson

The 1861 census shows an Esther Jackson age 16 born Warwickshire (and the matching birth registration is in Birmingham Sep 1844) at Poplar, parents John and Ellen.

Thanks for the welcome and the information Tati. I was wondering how I was going to identify the marriage, so it's great to have an experienced hand give me a lead on it! It looks like I may have to accept that in 1881 they just decided to opt-out.
