Hodges From Birmingham
« on: Friday 09 May 08 17:29 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone help please. looking for Hodges from Warwickshire. I have been tracing back my family name Hodges and found that the name is quite established in the Surrey area with one or two moving into Sussex. I can go back as far as  1776c were my 5 th Gt Grandfather Edward Hodges was living in Hornsey Middlesex. This is were the trail goes cold.

My father has just informed me that he knows for sure that the HODGES originated from Birmingham Warwickshire. can anybody help

Cheers

Mike

I think that we must always bear in mind that what relatives 'know' for sure, may not always be correct ~ or not completely correct.

My Mum's family are from South Wales.

Her grandmother was said to have been a member of the Mansell family of Margam. The family 'knew this'. Yet we have not found any evidence to support it.

My Mum's aunt said that the Hamptons were from Yorkshire. It turns out that a Hamptom married a Thornton, and that the Thorntons were from Yorkshire.

My grandfather said that the Hamptons were from Birmingham The nearest I have found is a Hampton, born about 1813, from 'Worcester'  according to the census.

Family legends can get mixed up.

But Birmingham was like a magnet, so it would not be surprising to find ancestors there, who might have travelled long distances for work.

You are looking for someone in Birmingham prior to 1776. Birmingham was relatively small then.

Here is the first map of Birmingham ~ 1731 (can be enlarged):

There are other maps, too, from later in the century, showing speedy growth, but Birmingham, then, only really covered the area which would now be considered the city centre and surroundings.
