This might be of interest - a Canterbury Marriage Licence entry

Thos Ady of Queenborough mariner bach & Mary Brice of the s minor, at Q. 20 Aug 1766.

They later have a son in Chatham, Richard Brice Ady

Thank you. I have seen that Richard Brice before somewhere, but can't remember where. Will have to look back over records.

It appears there is an additional page for this marrige with the name as Eddey.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89Q5-SLSF?i=32&cc=2515875

So it does look like she was Sarah Eddey.

Still stuck on working out who her parents are which means I can't get further back on her side. Any help would be appreciated.

I originally thought the witness was H Eddey, but it looks like it might actually be E.

When it comes to witnesses did one have to be male and one female or could they both be female?

I am hoping the witness might help me crack it.

looks like E Eddey. Both could be female. No gender rules for witnesses. Elizabeth Lee witnessed all 3 marriages on the page. In a parish I've transcribed for, a regular female witness was the wife of the sexton.

Thanks so E Eddey could be Elizabeth or Edward - not sure of any other E's? apart from abbreviations Eliza and Edwin, maybe Elspeth
