1857 Street Map Manchester Salford on Line
« on: Saturday 17 May 08 21:37 BST (UK) »
I have now put a large-scale street map of Manchester and Salford (1857) which I possess, on line. It can be found here:

http://www.artus-familyhistory.com/Manchester%201857/Manchester%201857.html

I hope soon to be putting up an early street plan of Liverpool.

Hello Orinoco
You must be a mind reader . My family originate from Ardwick and I had planned to visit the Manchester and Lancashire FHS to buy a map of the area . I have found many of the streets where they used to live and along with the Manchester Local Images I can now get a good idea of the area.

Strange though , when I go to pick anyone up from Piccadilly station , I always park in the Travis Street / Fairfield Road area . I see from the map  that Cross Street is there and that looks like exactly the place where I park .

My gt. gt. grandma was a shopkeeper in the 1843 trade directory and the shop I believe was on Cross Street . She was also shown on the 1841 census as living on Cross Street .
I was lucky to get a 1902 photo of what I believe was the shop from the local images section , so everytime I park up there now I will be thinking about that .
Strange old world we live in............spooky but strange !

Thanks for taking the time to do the map .

Eric

Thank you, Orinoco.

I can see Crowther Street, Salford, on your map, where my family lived in the 1850s and early 1860s. Also the cattle market, which is interesting, because my 3x great-grandfather was a butcher. You are very lucky to have a fantastic map like this.
