Link: 19th Century living conditions in Dublin

The Act of Union brought great economic changes to Dublin as it meant Ireland no longer had its own Parliament and the Irish MPs moved to London. The Gardiner Estates went into bankruptcy in the 1840s which meant that their properties in the north of the city were no longer reparied. Christchurch and St Patrick's Cathedral were repaired thanks to the generosity of a distiller in the first instance and a well known family with connections in the brewery business in the second instance.

"Dublin Tenement Life: An Oral History" by Kevin C. Kearns, published by Penguin in 2000, should give a greater insight into the living conditions in Dublin. http://tinyurl.com/5xrubf
