Hi Maureen,
googling the various informations - name and ship do bring up some people interested in Nisson Jacobson - perhaps you are one of them.
IGi seems to indicate that he was born Russia (or that area).
This is interesting:
http://www.argo.net.au/andre/RussianconvictsENFIN.htm
which refers to him and places him in London in 1817 - the time of his arrest and conviction.

sorry I can't be of more help.

Hi Maureen,
Nisson Jacobson was/is my great, great grandfather. He is mentioned in some records as one of 4 first Jewish convicts sent to Van Deimans Land. He is also mentioned on a plaque at the Jewish Synagogue/Museum in Sydney, Australia. I also am trying to find out more about him if you can help.
regards,
Peter

HI

i hope i can help, He was my great grandfathers (Arthur Albert Jacobson) - grandfather.

Nison Jacob Jacobson was born 1793 in Liepaja, Latvia. He died in Tasmania. He was a Russian of Jewish decent. He was charged with forgery with 2 other men in Ireland (1816) and sentenced in London (April 1817) to 14 years transportation. The Transport ship was the ex East India companies Lady Castlereagh. The Lady Castlereagh departed Portsmouth on 22nd December 1817 with 300 male prisoners. The ships log recorded smooth sailing and very little incident on-board and sailed via Sydney then onto Van Diemens land.

He was a cigar and cigarettes manufacturer in his early life.

I have not managed to find out exactly how he arrived in Ireland yet. But, was told as a child it was via the Nordic countries.

He was assigned to a Mrs Harriet Humphrey during his custodial sentence. She was the wife of a police magistrate, and minerologist Adolarius William Henry Humphrey
http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/humphrey-adolarius-william-henry-2212

There is a sketch of the police magistrate he worked for

Mr Humphrey was by all accounts a ruthless and hated overseer of the convicts because of the brutal treatment he meted out to them.

There is one record of insolence towards Mrs Humphrey as a convict. But, i have not found the punishment or a conviction if any for it. He became a farmer and grazer here in Van Diemen's land.  i have found records of some of his substantial cattle purchases at Ouse where he purchased every head of cattle. And, later some warnings for himself and his family and his cattle to stay off other people properties, Behind Ouse and up towards Osterley. Some of his later family settled in the Bream Creek / kellevie area. He died at Orielton north of Sorell. And, had properties from Ouse right though the southern midlands at one time or another.

Nison Jacobson received his conditional pardon in 1828. And, his ticket of leave on the 3rd December 1824

In 1824 Nessen married the free settler Hannah Athorn who had arrived from England the year before. They had 9 children and some of there children had 10-12 children as well so quite a substantial family.
Nison JACOBSON was born on 31 Aug 1792 in RUSSIA. He died on 19 Apr 1857. He married Miss Hannah ATHORN on 31 Aug 1824 in Hobart, TASMANIA. Hannah was 32, Nison 30 yrs

Children
Robert JACOBSON
Jacob JACOBSON
Elizabeth JACOBSON
Harriet JACOBSON was born on 12 Jan 1829 in River Dee
Frederick JACOBSON was born on 20 Jan 1827 in River Dee
Mr Charles JACOBSON was born on 16 Oct 1835 in New Norfolk
Mr David JACOBSON was born on 2 Jun 1844 in Cockpit, Bagdad
Mr George JACOBSON was born on 19 Sep 1831 in River Dee
Mr Joseph JACOBSON was born on 12 Dec 1846 in Brighton

Rex Burden has some excellent info on him here:
http://rexburdon.wikifoundry.com/page/Nisson+Jacobson+(GGG+Grandfather)

And an excellent image of Nessen Jacobson himself in later life,

His first name has been spelt Nisson, Nison, Nisan, Neesen, nessen and several other variations. Its Hebrew (Nissan) for the first month of the Jewish calendar. It is published in the Hobart Courier (Mercury) as both Nison and Nisson. I guess his name was Anglicised as time went on. I also remember my nan saying his name was changed.  Jacobson (Yakubzon)

Convict report
http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON31-1-23,217,36,L,46

Interesting spelling Nifson

The incidence with Mrs Humphry and another is recorded in 1833. The later was over a stolen long coat of Captain Bunster that was found at his property at Dee. However, there where mitigating circumstances and Jacobson was found to be not guilty of any offence. http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/8647477?searchTerm=jacobson&searchLimits=l-state=Tasmania|||sortby=dateAsc

Marriage certificate (on the right - second down)

He was married on his 30th Birthday. 31st August

Conditional Pardon 20th November 1829

Buying cattle on the river Ouse from Mr Wm Newman of (Glenarchy) Glenorchy?
With a preamble to Mr John Collins not to pretend he owned them apparently.

interestingly his death notice in the local paper has another misspelling of his name and age of death 94 years,
