Missing Fagan
« on: Friday 25 March 05 21:37 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather was Andrew Fagan born 1886. He married Margaret Crosbie 1919 in Glasgow. They had 3 children the youngest(my grandfather) born 1924 (Whiteinch, Glasgow).
Sometime after the birth of his children he "jumped ship" to Australia. Nobody has any idea where or what happened. All we know is he returned some years later to die. My grandfather was still a unmarried at this time so it must have been before 1954.

I have no idea where to begin with this one. We have always suspected he remarried over there and perhaps had another family.
Can anyone give me nudge in the rught direction at all?

Regards
Amanda

I can only find one Andrew Fagan and that is a death in 1887 in Ballarat, Victoria - records cover BMD's for 1836-1888
None in NSW, records only cover 1788 =1888
None in Tasmania - records 1803 - 1899
SA (marriages only 1917 - 1937) - none
Western Australia none - 1841 - 1905.

Sorry can't be more help

Hi Amanda
We have a 100 year rule over here which means that getting BDM's for recent years is not available.  Doesn't help you any, I know.
Do you know where he jumped ship - which state?
Why was he on the ship - passenger or crew member
do you know which ship?
Sorry - but these are the only things that come to mind where you might get somewhere.

Hi Amanda

Many states allow access to marriages after 50-60 years. NSW marriages are online to 1945 but no sign of your Andrew. There are 52 Fagan marriages 1920-1945. Perhaps he could have also used a different name??

Queensland allow access to 1939, but I only have access to them at libraries etc. Someone can probably check Vic for you & I'm not sure about the limits for the other states.

If you have access to an LDS centre they usually have Aust BDM records available.

Australia - FAGAN
« Reply #5 on: Wednesday 18 May 05 21:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,
My great grandfather was Andrew FAGAN. He was born 1886, Scotland. Married to Margaret CROSBIE and had 3 children. sometime around 1920/30 he "jumped ship" to Australia, and never got in touch with the family for some years.
Until he turned up at the door one day, to die!

I would like ot find out what happened to him during these missing years. Unfortunatley the only living relative is his daughter and she is not very willing to help. She says she finds it all too upsetting.
So where to next?
We have always suspected bigamy but i have no idea where to start to find anything out.
Any advice?
Much appreciated

Amanda

You might have better luck if you post on the Emigrants to Australia Board
funnily enough -  one of my relatives did the same thing -  at least I think he did - the great girls on that board are trying to help me find out

Hope you don't mind me suggesting the change ... :P

Hi Amanda,

There are 111 entries for FAGAN marriages between 1920 and 1945 in New South Wales. {index only goes to 1945}
None of those answer to the name of Andrew unfortunately.

Cheers
Geoff
