WOOD, George & Louisa 1841, 1851
« on: Sunday 01 June 08 06:02 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I am trying to find George & Louisa WOOD in the early censuses.

Louisa GALIEGUE b 1793, Threadneedle St, married George WOOD July 1830 in St Dunstan, Stepney.

I found a reference to Louisa in the London Times advising a partnership with Eliza WOOD was dissolved in 1826- they were at Wilson St, Finsbury-Square and were milliners and dress makers.

There is a death for a Louisa WOOD in 1873 - aged 79 in Islington, which matches perfectly, but I may be being hopeful!

The Galiegue families have been quite well traced and were silk weavers and hatters etc in the early days.

Any help in trying to locate this couple would be wonderful

Many thanks

Wow Karenlee! That was quick - I was modifying the message and then customers came into my shop, so I only just sent the modified message - and found your mazing find!

That census result is indeed very possible - another Galiegue descendent married a Robert CUNNINGTON who was born in the same place - Kingscliffe, Northamptonshire. Plus the birth fits wonderfully.

Thank you so much!

Following on from the 1851 census - I think I found Elizabeth getting married - I have taken a guess that she was actually Elizabeth Louisa WOOD who married Frederick William WHITE in Stepney in 1853 - if so they had at least 5 children - Louisa Amelia b 1857 and Frederick Charles b 1855 - both christened Shoreditch..then Esther Elizabeth b Dec. 1861 and Charles Atkins Wood WHITE b 1864 - he married in Hackney 1886, then Amy WHITE b 1870, Islington.

I found the family, minus the 2 Freds, in 1881 over in Enfield Rd, London

Hopefully they will show up in 1861 and 1871 at least - Elizabeth Louisa WHITE says she was born Clerkenwell in 1881 ( not Spitalfields).

The husband, Frederick William WHITE seems to have died aged 46 in Islington 1877

Cheers

Thank you Bryant! I do have most of the GALIEGUE's in the censuses now - took ages due to spelling errors!!

I have also just found the death of Fredercik Charles WHITE - died aged 23 in 1878 in Islington

Cheers and many thanks again

Kiwi

The areas you are looking at are not far apart.........Worship Street/Wilson Street "St Luke's" is opposite Spitalfield Market, just north of Liverpool train station (100 yards approx)
Threadneedle Street (bank of England territory) is just a few hundred yards down the road (south)

Spitalfield comes under Whitechapel R.D

yet

they married at St Dunstan's in 1830......... I have checked christianings at St Dunstan's from 1830 onwards and no sign of any children with parents George & Louisa

SO.......if the family supplied by Karenlee for 1851 is the right one they are back in the land of St Luke's and her children (i'm sure their has to be more!) would have been born when registration started within the Whitechapel R.D........but she would probably have been 44 by the time registration started so perhaps that is a no no.....

time to have another look......

1871
CANTERBURY ROAD, ISLINGTON
FRED W WHITE   HEAD  39   CLERK   MIDDX
ELIZABETH  "      WIFE   39                    "
FRED C        "       SON   15                    "
LOUISA A     "     DAUR   14                    "
ESTER E       "     DAUR    9                     "
CHAS A        "      SON     6                     "
AMY             "      DAUR    1                     "
LOUISA WOOD  MOTHER 77 (WID)        "
\
ANN LAMBERT    LODGER  68 (UNM)   HAISHAM, SUSSEX
---------------

so the death in 1877 of Louisa is the correct one...........

1861
41 PENN STREET, ST LEONARDS, SHOREDITCH, MIDDX
FREDERICK WILLIAM WHITE   HEAD  29  RIBBON WAREHOUSEMAN   LAMBETH, SURREY
ELIZABETH                   "         WIFE   29                                             CLERKENWELL, MIDDX
FREDERICK CHARLES   "          SON     6                                              SHOREDITCH, MIDDX
LOUISA AMELIA            "         DAUR    4                                                         "
GEORGE JAMES             "          SON    1                                                          "
LOUISA WOOD              mother in law 67 (wid) dress maker              SPITALFIELDS
-----------------

ST MARY STAINING ........where Louisa was in 1851 is reference HO 107/722 in 1841 (unfortunately I can't search by reference!)

Hello Jennifer

That was just the reference for St Mary Staining (found the ref on the web) but I don't believe she is listed as Louisa?

George married Louisa in 1830 (she was no youngster...do you have the Parish record of this....who are those witnesses?) so by 1841 she would have been approx 47 years  old and if the info is to be believed...... any other children would have been born before 1841 (more likely 1839 or before?) and would be no less than 10/12 years old by 1851.
Elizabeth Louisa WOOD who married Frederick William WHITE in Stepney in 1853  Cert required...who are those witnesses?

If the daughter went by the name Elizabeth........is it possible that the mother also had Elizabeth within her name and in the early years she used it?

I can see a nice family in 1841 at Chamber Street, Whitechapel......George being 42 and Elizabeth being 46 (look at the 1851) with 4 children the oldest being 10 the youngest being three...........the downfall is no Elizabeth/Louisa  >:(

Kiwi......
I have a concern....Louisa Galiegue married George Wood in 1830.........she would have been approx 37 years old when she married!   have you evidence that Louisa was born Galiegue and has not been married before to a Galiegue? ..... as this Louisa born circa 1793 is quite clear she was born Spitalfield/Clerkenwell and not at Threadneedle Street in the heart of the city of london albeit it is only a few hundred yards down the road

The 1851 does state ELIZABETH L (Louisa)aged 19 so does appear to be the right family
