Horatio Doncaster
« on: Sunday 01 June 08 22:19 BST (UK) »
Has anyone heard of this man? He was apparently a seaman, fireman, dock labourer. He changed his name from Damacastria to Doncaster and I really need to found out where he originated. He was born in 1854, if his death certificate is correct - it gives his age as 47 when he died in May 1901. He married in Devon, then spent some years in Bristol, then finally ended up in Cardiff, dying at 40 Ordell Street in Roath, Cardiff. I have found him on no census, ever. He was my great grandfather. Many thanks.

What were their childrens names and where and when were they born

Hi

Sorry - our messages crossed.  I have just amended my reply above but you won't have seen it.  Strange that the marriage was 1878 but the child was b 1876

Do you have a copy of their 1878 marriage cert as it should show his fathers name and occupation

Yes, it gives his father as John Damacastria, fisherman (it does not say that he was deceased, but I have not found him, either).

In 1901, daughters Kate, Blanche and Polly were living together at 40 Ordell St in Roath so that would account for why he died in Roath

Yes, and Susanna died at the same address in 1898 (both deaths registered by a Maria Hall). It must have been cramped for them all, living in 2 rooms ..
