There was money in the family that was left to a mistress

Recently seen a copy of great grandfathers will and he had two houses and two businesses, one lot left to his wife and the other to his mistress.

Same great grandfather died of syphillis in an asylum

His death certificate does give asylum as his place of death, don't know about the syphillis yet until I investigate the records.

I had a great aunt who was on the stage.

I found one great aunt whose occupation in the census was ballet dancer.
Claridge, Banes, Davidson, Guthrie. West Ham area.

Louise Shaw ( born 1871, New Zealand) married a Mr Murdoch and they went back to Ireland to live.

They had 2 daughters and a son and their granddaughter is IRIS MURDOCH- the writer.

Note my scepticism on this one BUT ;D;

IT IS TRUE

Have Louisa Shaws marriage cert. from 1888 in New Zealand and Yes her and Wills John Murdoch are the grandparents of Iris.

My grandmother is Louisas sister so Iris and I were cousins!!

Now the link to Lord and Lady Gough of Galway , Ireland I am a little more sceptical of ???

The gravestone of mother-in-law's grandfather says he died in Calgary, Canada.

He died at his home in Newcastle of cirrhosis of the liver.
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

One of my great-aunts was allegedly a "Tiller Girl"

I have one of those too which I believe is true, but how on earth do you research one young girl from the 100's. Mine supposedly went on tour to America with the troop too  :-\

Well I found out about mine by finding her direct descendents (via Genes Reunited) and talking to them.  My family knew a lot of sketchy details about my Great Aunt Kate, but everyone had assumed that she returned to the UK before WW2 started, but the reality was much more fascinating.  She didn't come home, and the Nazis commandeered her house, killed her dogs, drank all her wine from the wine cellar, and kept her in one room on house arrest all through the war.  Apparently the French resistance were keeping an eye on her.  Her children both escaped the Nazis, the son escaped through Scandinavia, and her daughter walked across France and escaped via Spain.  I'd only ever seen pictures of Kate as a frail old lady, but apparently she was a tough old bird !  Gripping stuff !  :)
RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Wow!!! great stuff Nick  8)

I know about my G/aunt from my mum, but this was early 1900's. She married in 1916 and although she married a violinist I don't think they would have allowed married women in the troup.

According to my late mother, her father was
a. born in Scotland
b. educated privately with help from the 'Buffaloes' of which he was later a member.
c. proficient on the violin.

I have the birth cert. - Tutbury Staffs.
No idea where he went to school.
Have found no connection with 'Buffaloes'.
What happened to the violin?

Most of mine are on my husbands side:

1. Father in law said his mother was born in Bedale N.Yorks. No, she was born in Norton near Stockton on Tees.

2. GGG grandad was a man of property, he built workmens cottages in Middlesbrough. I was amazed to find this one's true, I'm still working on it but he left 5 houses (mortgaged ;)) in his will and there are some unwieldly documents at Teesside Archives that need translating from legal into English that support this story.

Wonder what happened to those houses.......
