1841 Census Look-up please: Beavis
« on: Monday 02 June 08 16:03 BST (UK) »
I am looking for Joseph Beavis (Bevis, etc.) c. @1781-2 in Bexhill.  Therefore @60 in 1841.

I have him in 1851 and 1861 so I know he was alive in '41. My wild card searches have been futile, but maybe I'm missing something.

May have been living with one of his married children (last names; Barker, Towner, Childs) or with unmarried children:  Hannah, Joseph, Harriet, Elizabeth.

Thanks,

Jann

Where was he living in '51 and '61? his occupation?

Have you found the married children / unmarried children in 1841 to rule out that he is with them?

If not - why not post detials here of their names, place and year of birth.

If Joseph is not obvious on 1841 (and if he was I am sure you would have got him) then it will need a bit more detective work.

PS - thee is a Joseph Bovis - a farmer on 1841, living alone - is that likely? Or have you ruled that one out If you want details ask.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply and questions

In '51 he was living in Hastings with daughter Sarah and her husband John Towner.  Occupation: Carpenter.  In '61 he was still in Hastings  - I believe in the work house where he died in 1867.
I did not find him in the Towner (Sarah Beavis), Childs (Tabith B. )or Barker (Mary B) households in 1841

All of his children were born in Bexhill, those not named above were christened as follows: Hannah 1807; Joseph 1815; Harriet 1818 ; William Thomas 1819; Elizabeth Jane 1823.

Joseph Jr., and Harriet were also living with the Towners in 1851.

Re:  Joseph Bovis.  Does his age in '41 match a dob @1781-82.  I would rule him out on the basis of occupation.  in '51 Joseph may have given his occupation as carpenter because his son-in-law John Towner was a builder.

Hi - the Joseph Bovis had an age of 65.
But I would think that a possibility with the 1841 rounding.

The image is definitely Bovis

I'm no further with any of them in 1841
But have you seen the IGI - it has lots of Beavises (Beavii??) in Bexhill.
There is this family and a family with father John around the same time (Joseph's brother maybe?) plus some earlier ones I didnt look at....

Liz.

thanks so much for your efforts here.  I was looking for JB in '41 on the outside chance that he may have been living with someone who, by age, may have been identified as a possible  brother or sister

I've not been able to find a christening record for JB and was hoping to identify siblings and then check for their christening records.

As you noted Beavis was a common name in Bexhill and I'm sure there are connections there somewhere.  I just haven't been able to make them.
