Links: Cumberland Shipping; Please Add Posts
« on: Tuesday 03 June 08 00:49 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm starting a thread for sites covering local shipping and all it entails.
There are loads of brilliant sites on shipping in Cumberland.

At one time Whitehaven was the biggest port in England after Liverpool and there was a huge ship building trade
On the back of that came all the support trades, provisions for ships - food, equipment to sail the ship and to live on it for months - hence rope makers, sailmakers, crpenters etc and also pottery etc. Then there were the goods to trade such as coal and also trades in goods coming in such as Rum, tobacco, spices and fine woods and so on
Please add posts with links to any sites - especially local, covering shipping to and from Cumbria and within Cumbria - much transport before the railways was byy costal shipping.  Also fishing boat and the people involved.
I hope this proves useful.

Thanks and best wishes

(Through) Mighty Seas

(Link below).
This is a brilliant site with lists of ships from the various ports on the North West Coast, many with details about the structure of the ship, and incidents the ship has been involved in.

Also loads of pictures, stories and so on.

It's billed on some boards a an international site, and certainly it has an amazing coverage, but it started locally and is invaluable for local information

West Cumberland Coastal Towns and Ports.

If your relative worked in  or emigrated from one of our ports, there are some great pictures of the coast here [Mostly modern, but there's a limit to what you can do the coastline - though there is significant erosion in  places, and man has made his mark.[/
[Of course we all do photo's on a sunny day, I dread to think what it was like setting out or waiting for news of family afloat in the middle of the February storms, or when news was coming in of ships ice bound in Canada
Link below.  [Ckick on the town name for more photo's. [Other towns covered & history links but not on this thread.]

Cumberland shipping 'Strays' at Greenock, Renfrewshire:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ag4/

This is the Watt Library ship index, compiled from old Greenock newspaper announements - online & free  :D :D
Searchable pdf files, some names from Barrow, Workington etc.  Came to this via a rootschat link on the Renfrewshire board, started by WeeMary - nice one!

Hi

I just came across this' Irish Merchant Seaman

Being on the Irish sea, many of the seamen on the ships in Cumbrian waters came from Ireland and else where, and married in Cumberland families.
Irish Merxhant seamen active early 20C, with birthplaces, next of kin, ships, places visitted, all sorts.  Tens of thousands of them.http://www.irishmariners.ie/searchdatabase.php

You can send for the original and most of them have a photo  A few examples given.

I've got Hoey's, Cullens, Donoghue's, you name it
So if you've lost an Irishman or know he was at sea, give it a go!

Why do I always find these things late at night?
