looking for Dr. Read, Long Sutton
« on: Friday 06 June 08 17:49 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help? Am researching the Read family & trying to track down a great uncle - Dr. Harold William Read, born London 1882. He married Georgina Constance Sadler in 1921, in Surrey. They had a son, Peter James P. Read.
The only reference I have, after the marriage, is of a Dr. Harold William Read, medical practitioner, for many years at The Lawns, Long Sutton, Lincs. He died in Cambridge in 1957. Seems as though he could be the chap I am seeking but ...  Thanks in advance.

Hello, Worthing, and welcome to Rootschat.

Have you got the marriage certificate? That will provide a lot of useful information, if you're trying to go back in time.

I've found one birth that seems to fit the bill - Harold William Read, b. Q2 1882 Chelsea 1a 349.

And I think the 1901 Census R 13/435/25 (Norwood) must be him - says he was born in Brompton, which is just down the road from Chelsea, with his 3 sibling and parents Arthur F , a jeweller and Alice.

I'll give more details if you need them.

Hello meles,
Thanks for your messages. I have the early details of Harold William  & up to his marriage in 1921. He was for a time resident in the I.O.W  but returned to the mainland, where I lost him. I found Dr. Harold William Read (from telephone book records) practising for many years  in Long Sutton, but of course can't confirm that he is the right chap - except that his Death Cert. gives his son as Peter J Read which does fit in. I have the feeling that Peter Read was also a medical man, but that too is not certain. I would like to find  if he married & had children.  cheers, worthing

It probably is.  Long Sutton is a very small town even today, and it would have been a lot smaller in the 1920's and 1930's.  Not much room for many doctors, I would have thought.

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Hello  its4thezoo
Thanks for your message. Have been offline for a while so did not see it until today. I was quite thrilled to get it as had just about given up hope of finding anything about Harold William or his son. Harold was my mothers half brother, one of quite a large family. I have them pretty well sorted out but it looks as though you have filled in one of my queries as to his son Peter. You mention meeting him - does he have a wife & family? It would be good to find some living Reads! I would like to look at the Chamier Family page website - have you the address for it?  If there is anything you would like to know about the Reads, I should be able to help.

Best wishes  worthing
