Charlotte Reid born 1809 St.Quivox Ayrshire
« on: Saturday 07 June 08 01:18 BST (UK) »
The current Mary Charlotte Reid Mc Neil would dearly like to find our what became of her namesake. Charlotte Reid was born St. Quivox Ayrshire, 1809, daughter of  John Reid and Marrion Steel. She married Alexander Mc Neil in Eaglesham in 1828 though it would appear he was also an Ayrshire man. On their marriage cert. he describes his occupation as a gamekeeper and their first child Donald (1829) and perhaps a second child John was also born there (1831). Charlotte appears again in the 1841 census, living in Drymen in Stirling with another three children, Margaret, (1834), Agnes, (1836) and Alexander, (1839). She is 32 years old. Alexander her husband is not at that address at the time of census. Neither Charlotte or Alexander appear on the 1851 census and their children are living in Irvine, where John became a baker working with John Reid his uncle.

What happened to Charlotte and Alexander Mc Neil. I cannot find any record of their deaths on Scotlands People.

Would appreciate any info on this family. Thanks

I would really appreciate your

Hi Rosie

It would seem likely that Alexander and Charlotte probably died before 1851. As such, you won't find any death certificate for them on SP as statutory registration in Scotland only began in 1855. There are limited Death Old Parish Registers available (I would check the National Archives of Scotland site to see whether they hold any for the area you are interested in). Also, check for monumental inscriptions, you may be lucky and find that someone has transcribed their gravestone (if they had one). Again, I would check what is available for their area and local cemeteries.

Regards.

Hi Monica,

Will follow up your advice. Perhaps Charlotte died in Drymen where my last record of her comes from in 1841. Stilll wondering why they BOTH died so young?

Thanks for your help

Rosie

No, I do not have this information and  thank you so much for giving us another root in our family tree.  I did actually visit this churchyard a few months ago but didn't exactly know who I was looking for and didn't find anyone. I will go back soon.

Looks like Charlottes parents outlived both her and husband Alexander. Wonder what happened to them?

Thanks again

Rosie
