The Drummer (singular) or Drummer’s Arms (the name varies according to what source you use was one of three pubs/beerhouses in Northcroft Lane. Unlike the Two Brewers and London Apprentice it is still standing although no longer in use as a pub. Also unlike the other two it did not end up as a Simonds pub; in later years it was an Ushers pub prior to which is was owned by the Finn family (Phoenix Brewery). The London Apprentice was owned by Newbury Brewery Co and the Two Brewers by South Berks Brewery (both bought by Simonds of Reading, later Courage) the News (Edmund, Charles and Charles Edmund) were tenants, not owners.

The Two Brewers and London Apprentice (were fully licensed) both being closed because Simonds wanted to move the licences to better located houses that were not fully licensed. In the case of the Apprentice they demolished the Red House, an off-beer house in Hambridge Road and built a new pub which is still in business as the Old London Apprentice. The Drummer did not get its full licence until 1956 prior to which it was, presumably, a beerhouse (applied for a wine licence in 1949 but I haven't anything to show if this was granted).

As for shoemakers - apart from Christopher Shoemaker (burnt at the stake) I have not looked into any shoemakers/cordwainers in Newbury.

Hi Newbury Chap,

Looking back at information you have provided for me regarding both the Thorns and the News in Newbury, was wondering if you had access still to information in regard to the News in that 1815 Toomer census.

I am particularly looking for information on Daniel & Lucy New, Daniel was baptised 1st May, 1792 at Ashbury, Draper and his wife Lucy born 1795 at Worley Staffordshire.

Daniel & Lucy lived in Newbury, certainly there in 1841 anyway, living at Wash Road, Newbury, was wondering if they lived there in 1815.    They had children, Jane b. 1821, Martha b. 1826, Lucy b. 1830, John b. 1832 and Charles b. 1835.

No sign of Daniel or Lucy New in Newbury 1815. Only two News, James & Elizabeth both aged 58. Living in Red Lion Yard, he was a shoemaker.

In the late C19th, early C20th New Bros was a significant local business as corn/seed merchants and millers. Don't know if these are all related or not.

Hi Newbury Chap,

Thanks for this info once again.

Not sure if this business belongs to our family, is it possible to find out who the business owners were.

Mum 44,

Getting back to all the previous information you've given me with regard to the Thorns, I've now received the marriage certificate for Edmund Thorn and Hannah Nutter (nee Frost).   Edmund's father's name is James Thorn.

Was wondering if you would be able to assist me once again with any information on him and his wife.    I would think James Thorn would have married prior to 1791.

I have been reading the posts about the THORNs and NEWs with interest.  My PURDUEs were cordwainers in Newbury and they ran the "Two Brewers" from late in the 18th century until the 1860s.  My 4x great grandfather Charles PURDUE is at West Mills in 1841, 1851 and 1861.  His parents James PURDUE and Hannah SKINNER ran the "Two Brewers" before him.  I have been on the site of the pub today and have a scan of a postcard of the public house taken some years before it was demolished.

Regards

Scurlockgirl

Hi Scurlockgirl,

Wow, very interesting, our Edmund New, as you've probably read in postings, also was licensee of the Two Brewers, what a small world.  The London Apprentice Inn was also licensed by my G Grandfather and Grandfather before they migrated to Australia.

Would really love a copy of postcard of the Two Brewers, no doubt you might want my email address for that.   Let me know if you do.

So much history with the News and Thorns.
