1891 census John Scrimshaw Newton
« on: Saturday 22 January 05 01:11 GMT (UK) »
I am wondering if someone could possibly help me please, although unless there is an index to the 1891 census for Yorkshire, it might be difficult.

John Scrimshaw Newton, 1820-1892, was a Derbyshire man, but he lived the last few years of his life in the Skirlaugh area of Yorkshire where his wife, Ellen Tasker, came from and he died there. She was born in Coniston where there were a lot of Taskers in that era.

Is it possible please for someone to find John Scrimshaw Newton and his wife in the 1891 census in the Skirlaugh area? I have him in the 1881 still in Derbyshire.

My grateful thanks

Hi Mary

Sorry - I've been through the 1891 census for Yorkshire and can't find your man.

Do you have any more clues that might help?

Best wishes

Thank you very much, Ticker, that was really kind of you to go right through Yorkshire. I am starting to wonder either if he has been mistranscribed or he did not arrive in Yorkshire until after the 1891 census perhaps, though indications are he was there in 1891. I might try the Derby page as well, just in case.

My thanks
Mary

Hi Mary

No problem.

I am not sure what I have is a totally complete record of Yorkshire in 1891 so I wouldn't give up on the idea that he was there in 1891.

Good luck and best wishes

I have Scrimshaw on my family tree , and randomly stumbled upon the grave of a John Scrimshaw newton ( husband of Ellen) whilst out walking today. The Church is in Swine , Yorks . The headstone read Died 19th March aged 72, unfortunately im uncertain now of the year. Would this information fit with yours ?? it states the place of residence as Ellerby.

I am trying to see if there is a connection to a Sophia scrimshaw on my tree. Was quite shocked to come across the grave as the name isnt a common one !
