Do you already have Charles in 1871? If not let me know and I will look him up. BTW I know New Town St well  my Grandad (Farr) and his father and grandfather lived there. Regards Jan  ;)

Hi Jan, Thanks for your reply, Yes I have managed to find him in 1871 - he is living with his family in New Town Street. I got his marriage certificate today - he married Xmas Day 1861 and was living in New Town Street at the time. BTW, Do you live in Luton? What are the houses in the street like?

Charles Hawkins boarder unmarried 19 ag lab born Hitchin Herts
in household of William Windmill 23 b Luton

I couldn't see any other Hawkins in NewTown St.

Hi again Lucia,
I moved away from Luton in 1967, although continued to visit until 1985 when my grandfather died. By the time I knew him he was living in Cowper St about half a mile from New Town St. The area as I recall it was brick, slate roofed terraced houses with front doors opening straight onto the streets, there were passageways at intervals through the  houses giving rear access. Visit this link, sorry it is so long, and you will find descriptions of some houses in Newtown St when they were auctioned in 1897.  Happy searching  ;) Jan
