Many thanks all,
With your excellent help I have now ordered two transcripts of the brothers death's
I have to say - im really amazed at the amount of detail that is on-line within Austrialia

The bad blood I talked about, nobody is quite sure what its about, some say a divorce, but I havent been able to prove anything along this line
I know all THREE brothers came to Australia, (Just for reference, his name was Frederick William Smith) but my Grandfather came back to the UK, im told that the brothers didnt get along too well..

Now, im not too sure if this will be the right place to ask a follow on question, but what the hell, here go's

Now I have started to find these long lost relatives, the chance of me now coming accross a living relative is getting higher, which in some ways is good.. But, how should I approach them? (Not that im going to knock on there door!)
Is a letter a good start and has anybody any good advice on this?

Hi Rob,
It is great to read how much you are enjoying your search.

Now, in order to find living decendants, you wouuld need to find children of the 2 men we have talked about and as online birth records for NSW finish at 1907, that is not an avenue.

The resource cando has given re. death notices may prove a worthwhile follow up, but 1970 is a long while ago.

The white pages directory ....Too many Smiths.....

However, in response to your question, yes, I would always say a letter first which includes a stamped address envelope.

A stamped address envelope is a good idea - but how can this work accross different countries?

Im sure that Australia's postal service would probaby spit tacks seeing a letter posted in Australia with New Zealand stamps on it..
or some naughty stamp collector would half inch the stamps...

This is the first time i have ever heard of international reply coupons, but I have never needed to send a SAE to another country before!
