watts or barratt ???
« on: Friday 04 July 08 14:13 BST (UK) »

Hello

I really do have a problem with my  william watts born netherby who supposed to have married emily ellis i have both their death certificates but could not find the family on the 1841 census.
I have been in contact with another person seeking info on the watts and he has told me that the family on the 1841 census are under the name of barratt.
william barratt married emily ellis in 1824 at west coker
On the 1851 census they are watts, but in 1854 ann the daughter married under the name of barratt.
this is what puzzles me is george another child baptised in shereborne as george watts was registered as george barratt

Theres more confusion........buried in beamster  march 1840 was a first son called george, the same day a william barratt aged 41 was also buried however in registration records there is no william barratt but a william walter watts??

Anyone kind enough to confirm some or all of this muddle i would be very grateful.

waiting in hope

I can't help you much with your problem except to confirm the 1841 census entry:

HO107/295/7   Sherborne

William Barrett, 41, ag lab, Y
Emmily B, 42, Y
William B, 16, Y
Ann B, 13, Y
Catharine B, 11, Y
John B, 9, Y
Emma B, 6, Y
Robert B, 4, Y

The ages and names match the Watts 1851 entries.

The IGI has only these:

Ann Barrat            dau William and Emily       bap 1/2/1828        Beaminster
Jemima Barrett     dau  William and Emily      bap  25/12/1834   Beaminster

Alternating surnames are often to do with illegitimacy or re-marriage. William could have been born with one surname and then inherited his father/stepfather's name later.

It would be worth looking at the Netherbury records to see what name William was baptised under, and then whether his mother (re)married later.
