Hi Annie :)

This might also be of interest ....

http://www.marland.org/vital_records/AuLdau-mar.htm

..there is reference (on the first page) to Harry Marland's marriage indicating that his father, Buckley, was deceased in 1915. His brother, Alfred was a witness.

I have not yet found .. on the 1901 census, brothers Edward and Harry (who appear on the 1891 census).

Now I have ;D ....

In 1901 Edward and Harry Marland are listed as Marsland and they are staying with their Aunt Ruth Liddiard nee Morrall at Hayfield RG13/3279 Folio 109 Page 7.

Ruth was born 1864 in Shropshire Malinslee (near Dawley) and she is the sister of Jane Morrall who married Buckley Marland. Their parents were William and Mary Ann (nee Brice) and the family should be traceable through the censuses, if required.

Malinslee appears on the censuses in a variety of phonetic attempts by the enumerators such as Merlins Lane, Malins Lea as well as the correct spelling.

This is either a very interesting or a very misleading entry (or both ;D) ...

1901

Leigh RG13/3592 Folio 78 Page 18

George Deighton Gardiner Head M 30 Railway Telegraph Clerk Lancs Lancaster
Sarah do Wife M 29 Lancs Mossley
Alice Marland Niece 8 Lancs Mossley

12 Henrietta Street, Leigh

In 1900 a Sarah Marland married George Deighton Gardiner at Mossley St George and she is the correct age to be the sister of Buckley Marland (as on the 1881 census). The niece shown above could be your Alice Ruth Marland.

If these are your people it would mean that Aunt Sarah should have been called Gardiner when Charles lived with her (unless she married again). If they are not yours, there are a lot of strange coincidences including the address at Henrietta Street (but in Leigh rather than Ashton)

What do you think ?

DS ???

ps The above is what (I think) the original census document says. On Ancestry the surname of George and Sarah is listed as Prudence and Alice is listed as Masland.
