Gwen ......... don't panic!

I had another look at Robert with his mum on the 1891 census because I wasn't sure of her birthplace and thus had another idea .......... it looked more like Westbury (I've changed the original posting to that effect) thus ..............

I think that I've got it right this time

1871 .............. the writing on the census is VERY difficult to read but .................

25 C....................  Street, Roath

John GIBBS head mar 52 labourer b.Glos Halle??
Mary Ann wife 50 b.Glos Westbury on Trym
Elz?? Ann dau 20 b.Glos Westbury on Trym
John son 2 b.Glos Westbury on Trym
Clara? .......... GIBBS dau 3m b.Cardiff
John EDWARDS boarder 21 labourer b.Glos Westbury on Trym
Henry MANSFIELD boarder 28 labourer b.Glos Durdham Downs

RG10/5367 folio 46 page 44

Somebody who is familiar with Roath or Welsh names may have some idea what the street is called.  The wording Great Eastern Inn (on reflection it may be Terrace) has been crossed out - this is the same wording as on the other GIBBS in the 1871 census.

Henry wasn't indexed as MANSFIELD - the "s" had been left out.  I think that Elz Ann is quite likely your Elizabeth Susan and possibly her husband to be Henry MANSFIELD  ???

That looks better doesn't it?

Hi Gwen

I still can't find them in 1881 nor Henry in 1891 so will give up for now ...............

These are the registration districts in Gloucestershire in case it helps .........

http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/gls.htm

I googled the web and Durdham Downs appears to be in the Bristol/Clifton area also.

I don't know about the birthplace of the father, John GIBBS  It looks like Halle but I'm not sure what it is supposed to say.

Gwen, I don't know what it is but I don't think it is Clifton.  More like C...stlellah.  Somebody more familiar with the area might come to the rescue!

Gwen

In the same household as Elizabeth & Robert (1891 Hammersmith) there is a Samuel SOMERS unm 36 labourer b.Durdham Downs - the same place as Henry!  He is listed as a lodger.  Marital status for Elizabeth says "M".

I've no idea why Elizabeth & Robert were in London by 1891 nor where they were in 1881 (yet) but who was this Samuel SOMERS  Had Henry died?

Never thought of looking for him (Samuel) before - the birth place didn't ring a bell until I found the birthplace of Henry MANSFIELD (Durdham Downs) yesterday ....................... but it looks like Samuel was more than a lodger ...........

1901

199 Haydon's Road, South Wimbledon, Surrey

Samuel SUMMERS head mar 47 navvy b.Durdham Downs
Elizabeth wife 49 ironer b.Westbury on Trym

RG13/660 folio 166 page 19

Well well well .................. we're on to something here now .............. what do you make of this?

1881

St James Road, Hammersmith (no. 1 I think)

Samuel SUMMERS head mar 24 general labour b.Bristol
Elizabeth wife 49 washer b.Westbury
Robert son 6 b.Cardiff
Sophie dau 3 b.Hammersmith

RG11/0063 folio 86 page 54

SUMMERS - no wonder we couldn't find them!

This is what I am thinking .............. in 1881 Samuel (or maybe Elizabeth) fills in the form and puts them down as a married couple.  Ten years later and perhaps the son Robert (or maybe even Elizabeth) fills in the form and puts Samuel down as a lodger!  Thank goodness they did otherwise we'd never have found any of them!

Still don't know what happened to Henry but it looks as if the marriage didn't last long whatever happened.  Prisoners were included on the census in the same way as everybody else though sometimes only by initial.

Best wishes

Casalguidi
