Richard SCRIVENER b. 1727- 1799
« on: Friday 11 July 08 01:05 BST (UK) »
I'd appreciate any help finding out more about him - I feel sure he must connect up somewhere with the Ipswich or Sibton Scriveners. He married Hannah Ridley 29/5/1751 in St. Mary's, Woodbridge and then Abigail Keer in Earl Soham 1765. In Abigail's father's will, he is mentioned as being a schoolmaster at Framlingham. Richard died in Cretingham in 1799. I have found only one son, John Scrivener b. circa 1759  who married Elizabeth Mann 8/7/1790 in Badingham. He is described as a widower of Diss in the Badingham fiche. Thanks for any help. Alan

It might be worth contacting them to see if anyone is able to help.

Hi Rick

Many thanks for your prompt reply and advice. I've only been working on my tree since last autumn and have been able to find a fair bit. I've looked at this site several times and am glad that I've finally made contact.

Best regards,

welcome Alan, there are many Scriveners on the Suffolk burial index available on CD form the Suffolk FHS.

here are a couple of relevence:

Richard Scrivener  d.10th /bur 15th / 7/ 1799 Cretingham. age 72

E scrivener d. 2oth / bur.26th /3/1799 cretingham. wife of Richard age 73. ???? May be E is a transcription error. most entries have names. no Abigail or hannah.

Richard Scrivener bur 4/3/1796 infant framlington.   brother of john?? maybe

Thanks very much Diddy. ;)

Since the original posting I have been to the Suffolk record office in Ipswich. There were a few references to Richard b. 1727 in the presbyterian records and I saw the parish entries for his marriages by licence to Hannah Ridley then Abigail Keer. All were literate; for the former he is listed as "of Braintree Essex", which could refer to his birthplace or place of residence.   ???

Does the burial index include nonconformists?

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,

Alan

Hi Alan - the only info about the index as follows:

SUFFOLK BURIAL INDEX
Now covers 573 Burial Grounds and in excess of 1,228,000 named individuals. This is a single Index covering all periods from the beginning of parish registers to 1900.

so suspect it doesn't matter what denomination.

think the' of braintree, essex' would be his place of birth.

Thanks once more Diddy ;)

I also thought Braintree, Essex would be his birthplace, but others have said it could just as well be his place of residence at the time of his marriage. I checked the parish registers for Braintree, but could find no mention of any Scriveners - being a nonconformist only marriages are likely to be recorded anyway. They were very hard to read.

There were so many Scriveners in the Ipswich area and the fact that he married a Hannah Ridley from Woodbridge would seem to suggest he was from the same area. Perhaps he had accepted a teaching post in Braintree, who knows? Anyway, I have recorded all the info I can obtain on the Scriveners of the Ipswich area in the hope that one day I'll find the missing link.

Kind regards,

Alan
